Is Steem accepted in the Baltic States, or not? Lets investigate!

in #steem6 years ago

A few days ago, a report came out that said Samsung stores in the Baltic States will begin accepting cryptocurrencies.

That report can be seen here:

https://news.bitcoin.com/samsung-stores-in-the-baltic-states-now-accept-cryptocurrencies/

The report said that Samsung stores in the Baltic States had struck a partnership with the payment processing firm Coppay which would facilitate the use of 7 different cryptocurrencies within the region.

Those 7 being:

BTC
ETH
DASH
NEM
XRP
LTC

and.... (drum roll)
STEEM

Specifically, customers shopping at the Samsung stores in Tallinn, Riga, Vilnius, and Kaunas were said to be able to use any of the above mentioned cryptocurrencies.

This is where things seem to have gotten a bit strange...

The next day after the news report was released, an update was added to the report.

The update reads as follows:

**This post has been updated on July 23, 2018. According to a few reports, a Samsung spokesperson has explained the firm does not have a partnership with the Coppay company. The Coppay firm denied these findings, but have since deleted their blog post announcement. Which means it’s very likely that Samsung stores in the Baltic states don’t accept cryptocurrencies for payments.

Coppay originally said this in their announcement:

“Customers in Tallinn, Riga, Vilnius, and Kaunas can buy Samsung smartphones, tablets, laptops, TV-sets, and more with digital money."

Coppay denied the above findings about there not being a partnership, but has since deleted their blog post...

Hmm...

Seems like there is no cryptocurrency partnerhip in place right? Not so fast...

Given the above information, it looks very much like these Samsung stores will not be accepting cryptocurrency payments.

However, I stumbled upon this written by fellow steemit user @onealfa...

Basically he is noticing the same confusion around the news as I am.

However, this part of his post is very interesting...

Check it out:

"Next (even today is Sunday), I have made personally a phone calls to local Samsung shops in Vilnius, and was able to get a verbal confirmation, that all is true, I can come any moment, and they will accept my payment for any possible product in Bitcoin. Woo-hoooo!
Not only Bitcoin core (BTC) is honored, but also Dash (DASH), NEM (XEM), Steem (STEEM) ( !!!), Ripple (XRP), Litecoin (LTC), and Ethereum (ETH)."

Well there you have it folks...

It sounds like a fellow steemit user got verbal confirmation that the news is legitimate despite an update that came shortly after the original announcement saying otherwise.

Steem and other cryptocurrencies will be accepted at Samsung stores within the Baltic States!

This is a great step in the right direction of getting steem and cryptocurrency to actually have some real world use cases aside from just speculation.

Stay informed my friends.

Let’s take a trip to the Baltic!!! 😂😂😂

Your money, ahem your steem, goes further there!

Steem sucks because bitcoin going up steem going down i

Can't really argue... Steem is one of the few coins in the top 40 that isn't green right now. Ugh...

@jrcornel i saw this news few days back only. This is a very big news for all of us Crypto Investors. Samsung is also a big brand . by the way thanks a lot for sharing this AMAZING news with us.

Yes it is, this kind of thing fees on itself too. As more merchants accept crypto, others will follow suit. Just gotta get the ball rolling.

Thank you for the important information shared keep it up nice job

You got it.

It is a grreat news for us steemians. thank for it jrcornell. feel free to visit my blog.

Yes it is.

It would be awesome if a steemian living near those stores went there and bought something with steem.

But I don't understand why they say one thing and then they say the complete opposite? What is the reason for that happening?

Fake news? It may be financially motivated or it may just be business. Sometimes people aren't supposed to announce things publicly, and they do accidentally.

Only way to know for sure is for someone to actually head out to the shop and check. We surely have plenty of baltic Steemians who could.

Yep, that would do it.

This will be a huge step towards wider crypto adoption. And it's especially amazing that STEEM is on the list.

I dream of the day when I can buy something from McDonalds and pay with STEEEM. If that they will come, we can safely say that we made it. :)

Yea, when looking down that list one coin seemed to stand out as not quite like the others. Wonder why they chose to allow steem over some others.

Thanks for the great info!

Huge if true. Baltic states are fast at adopting IT innovations.

Funny as I was also posting about it. It is relevant for our community - let's see if it is real.

If it is its a nice proof that Steem is on its big way ;)

Those other coins accepted are much higher in terms of market cap, something seems off in terms of steem being included in that group. That or something is off with its current valuation...

well that news spreaded like hell hahah but great you shared it with all the facts :)

Samsung has its own electronic payment system called Samsung Pay:

Perhaps management is trying to discourage competition?

That could be part of it.
