We are nearly two weeks into the post-hardfork era where everyone gained free downvotes, but lost some posting rewards. It has seem some drama with the blockchain going down for a couple of days and some flagging wars as the vote sellers reacted to what the community was doing. My friend @katharsisdrill got caught up in this when he created a mascot for those voting to counter excessive 'bid bot' usage. That is still going on, but some big accounts are taking action against some of the abuse.

There are some debates going on about what constitutes abuse, but it is generally accepted that buying multiple votes for a low quality, low interest post is bad for Steem, even though the vote sellers always profit. There is some merit in buying votes to promote projects and important news, but those with a lot of SP should not think themselves overly important as to be on Trending all the time. Some of them are buying votes and declining rewards or sending them to the @null account, which is better.
We are seeing some new curation accounts and some vote sellers switching to a better curation model including @curangel and @smartsteem. The former allows you to nominate candidates for their downvotes is you delegate to them. I am seeing good people I know get rewarded by these schemes.
I believe Steemians should look to use their downvotes for the benefit of Steem in general. You get 2.5 full flags each day before it needs to recharge. A good account to follow is @dmacs which is featuring some people to check on. If you are nervous of retaliation you should check how much SP they hold. A lot of them do not have much as they are always powering down to free up Steem to spend on more votes. I do not know how much they are making, but they are taking an unearned share of the reward pool that we want to claim back.
Another way to do this is to join the @SteemFlagRewards community. This is not the sinister conspiracy some paint it as. It is a group of Steemians who are prepared to take the risks of dealing with abuse for the good of Steem. It is not their policy to attack people doing good work here, but as individuals you may get see some downvotes that some would disagree with. We each make our own judgements.
In any case there is still more than enough Steem abuse going on to use up my downvotes.
Some other people I suggest you check out are:
- @blewitt is a comic store owner who has brought in lots of new people. He also has some very funny posts of his own.
- @markshepard is a singer (and hypnotist!) with some nice videos to go with his songs.
- @bozz is a great community member who posts about what he gets up to as well as commenting a lot.
- @papilloncharity does good work in South Africa whilst sharing great photography with we Steemians.
- @TenKMinnows is an account I operate and delegate to which supports small accounts who are trying to build. We need more active and engaged Steemians to curate and engage.
As always I welcome suggestions of other cool people to follow in comments or your own #FollowFriday post.
Steem on!
The geeky guitarist and facilitator of the 10K Minnows Project.

- I'll buy guitar picks for Steem
- Get a Wirex Debit Card to spend your crypto.
- Get some passive income with Mannabase
- Get paid to search at Presearch
- Battle for cards on Steem Monsters
- I have Steem accounts to give away to worthy people!
Interesting... 2.5 flags everyday. I wonder who posts 10 times a day that I can flag....
You might as well. @blocktrades is doing it.
I noticed, that's very promising. Good on @blocktrades for taking a stand

I'm a bot. I detect haiku.
Steev! You mah only friend!
Great stuff as usual.
I really hope not. Keep sticking with Steem and the community will thank you.
I can't say I understand all of this or even most (bid-bots? Buying votes?) and yes I am afraid of retribution if I use a downvote, although I have wanted to against an entity that was bragging about how hard they were "working" and how much they were making by "curating" after the fork when clearly they were not actually reading a dang thing.
It is a personal choice as with everything you do here. You do not earn anything directly by downvoting, but it frees up some rewards. Buying votes has some utility to publicise a post, but some just do it for profit and seem to get no real engagement. Curation up or down is designed to distribute rewards. It can be abused, but this new power lets us do a little more.
The poor Bidbottophant is back - after another drama I was asked to revive him. Hopefully he is not bullied this time!
I'll use some more time on new accounts from now on, and also try to drag up some of the older accounts. I just found out that @steemswede is still posting for example.
I heard @blewitt also sells nudes. He has some interesting toys. Or so I heard... 🤣

Yes! @blewitt is always great fun! Well worth following, even if you don't collect comics or toys (many of his stories are relatable to anyone who has worked in retail or with the public in general), but he is especially entertaining if you ARE a collector of nerd treasures!

Super kind of you my friend. Seriously. Means the world to see this. Thanks 🙏

Part of the problem is what I consider to be a decent post might be considered low value by someone else. It's all subjective aside from the obvious stuff. If I put a lot of time into a post that is similar to what I normally post and decide to buy a small boost for it from OCD, I don't want to get dinged for that.
It should be up to the community, so you take more of a risk by buying votes now. We don't want rules and you cannot enforce them anyway. I consider my rewards okay for what I do and there is potential for the Steem to be worth more some day.
What a great idea about sharing great people to follow. Ive found I usually get stuck in this circle of people I like to follow and find it hard to get out of my "Steem Bubble" if you will.
Nice to get a few more people to follow.
Thanks brother. Appreciate the plug!

No problem. You are doing good stuff and deserve a mention. Maybe you can do a #FollowFriday for those you have introduced to Steem

I've been seeing the trending posts and they still suck.
I'v been testing out @tipu to see if it is worth investing in. And yeah, the extra boost is nice. It seems sometimes the small accounts shid get a break on using a bid not now and again to promote their work and claim a small piece of the steem pie.
I got downvoted on this post....
Is this classed as abuse?
https://steemit.com/blog/@lucylin/what-do-women-really-think-i-dunno-but-i-can-definitely-make-some-money-from-it
I see no logical reason for it.....
I don't know what that guy's issue is with you. It is a totally personal thing and we have total freedom. Have you asked him? Downvotes can be abused, but generally they seem to be doing good.
I left a comment, nothing so far...what a dick.
how do I get @freezepeach to look at it?
(it wasn't just him I got flagged to oblivion by, it was the usual suspect also).
It's the principal, not the rewards.
Freezepeach has a discord channel where you can report this.
ah, ok - I never use discord.
Cheers anyway.
