So did Steem when it launched ;) The truth is that making the decision to pursue an application-specific approach (e.g. Apple) versus an application-general approach (e.g. Windows) is what enables everything from 3 second block times to fee-less transfers and now SMTs. By focusing on what matters for real app developers and not everything that is possible to enable we are able to accomplish far more with our protocol. And by "our" I do mean our: the Steem community's blockchain. We know implementing SMTs is possible, it will just require a lot of engineering work by our blockchain wizards who are absolutely mad geniuses, witness support, and community support, but certainly do-able.
