I think that when I can get Steem for posting quality content, commenting, and upvoting, and it doesn't cost me money, out of my pocket, then it's free. If Manna drops coins every Thursday, it free. If I sign up for something, and give info that anybody can find on the internet, get free tokens, I'm good with that.

Exactly. Although @cryptoeagle has a point...in the bankster world the FREE part was an enticement. There was a cost because they wanted your email addy to send you offers,....or that free store card to track what you purchased.
With this, using Manna as an example, yes they have to do some checking in large part because they are a US company and have to comply with the KYC rules. Trust me, they are only doing that because the government says so. It is a major pain for them to have to do that with every person.
