The word here translated deacons, is the same that is sometimes translated as "minister", in relation to service, to serve. That word and its derivatives are used in the following passages. Paul and Apollos were called deacons. The Lord Jesus was considered a servant, a minister, in Matthew 20:28. In Romans 13: 4 government officials are presented as persons to the "service" of God, as "ministers." And in 2 Corinthians 11:15, the word also applies to the "ministers" of Satan. So "deacon" or "minister" is a general term for a servant, servant or worker.
We tend to think that the account of Acts 6 provided the occasion for the beginning of the office of deacon in the early church. However, the Greek word for deacon is not even used in that Biblical passage. But we hope to have enough Biblical basis to say that those men were appointed deacons of the church.

A deacon, although concerned with the material affairs of the church, should be a spiritual person. Problems often occur when appointing a deacon based on his physical qualities rather than his spiritual qualities. Sometimes we think that because a person is successful in his business, or in his profession, he will be a good deacon. Unfortunately, there are many people who have been named following those criteria.
We have tried to emphasize that in 1 Timothy the local church is an organization that needs to manifest itself, that is, to make its presence and influence felt in the community, and in doing so, it has to face daily problems and needs. He must deal with building problems (such as air conditioning, light, etc.) and many other issues that do not seem very romantic or ideal. However, the important thing is that the church must have a spiritual ministry in the community. We often put the material requirements first, but the people in the positions must have the spiritual requirements that the apostle was specifying to perform those functions. Someone has rightly said that "when the church ceases to be in contact with the other world, it is no longer in contact with this world." We agree with that evaluation. Until the spiritual aspects are emphasized, a church can not carry out the material and practical functions here on earth. Deacons, therefore, must have certain spiritual aptitudes.
They must be honest or worthy, honorable, as other versions translate. It says here that they should be without duplicity, that is, sincere. They should not have two faces.
The word of a man should be considered an important factor. It can be dangerous for a deacon to try to please everyone, or that he does not have the courage to stand firmly in a situation that requires it. It is expected to maintain a balance between the energy of your personality, and flexibility.
It is also required that they be not given to much wine, The Bible teaches temperance, moderation. We do not believe that it teaches a total abstinence because in those times there were not many medicines and the wine was used like a remedy. In 1 Timothy 5:23 Paul encouraged Timothy to drink a little wine because of certain stomach upsets. Even today, many medicines that we take have a high percentage of alcohol.

Finally, it was established as a requirement that they should not be greedy for dishonest profits. Here we are warned that the deacon should not have an insatiable love for money. He should be a person of integrity, who handles the money of the church in an honest way. Nothing can harm a church other than the accusation that some deacon handles finances arbitrarily. The administration of money given to the church for specific causes must be carefully assigned to the needs for which it was donated.
