I recently wrote on the principles of proper and effective communication and today, I want to highlight briefly, the problems of poor family communication. As we all know, communication is a very vital aspect of life. Without it, life sucks.
Just as proper communication is the foundation of a strong, healthy family, poor communication is the bane of a good family relationship. Poor family communication comes in different forms. These include yelling, silent-treatment or never talking, talking and unwilling to listen, treading blames, abusing, abusing or name-calling, criticism and sarcasm, aggressive statements or actions, keeping or hiding family secrets, labeling a person as bad rather than saying the behaviour is wrong, using ultimatums or threats, hurting or harming another person.
And what are the effects of these forms of communication on family? They lead to excessive family conflict, ineffective problem solving, weak emotional bonding and lack of intimacy, divorce and marital separation, behavioural problems in children, as well as depression, anxiety and low self-esteem in young people.
The devil always seeks to hinder proper communication in the family. So to prevent him wrecking your home, be born again and lead your family to the same experience. Close up the communication gap in your home as a Christian, and communicate frequently with your spouse and children. The most difficult challenges facing families today is finding time to spend together. With your busy schedules, it may be difficult to find sufficient itme to spend with your family in meaningful conversation, yet it is extremely important that you make time to communicate with them frequently.
Talk in the car; eat dinner together; schedule informal or formal family meetings to talk about important issues that affect the spiritual and secular life of your family; have daily morning and night devotions where you read the Bible and pray together as a family; talk to your children at bedtime and to your spouse in bed.
Use other creative ways to make time to communicate with your family even when they are distant from you. Take advantage of the modern information technology e. phone calls, e-mails, and social media to reach them always. Remember, proper and good communication is very vital for a successful and healthy family. Don't leave any communication gap in your family.
Shalom!
