STEEMCHURCH: Why did God command Abraham to sacrifice Isaac?

in #steemchurch6 years ago (edited)

Abraham had obeyed God many times in his walk with Him, but no test had been shorter than the one described in Genesis 22.

Source

"And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of."
Genesis 22: 2

How did Abraham respond to this demand from God? It was really hard! The answer is simple, Abraham responded with immediate obedience. Very early the next morning, Abraham set out with the servants, an ass and his son Isaac, along with the wood for the offering. His obedience to God's command gave God the glory He deserves and is an example for us of how to glorify God. When we obey as Abraham did, trusting that God's plan is the best possible argument, we exalt His attributes and praise Him for them. The obedience of Abraham, exalted the sovereign love of God, His trustworthiness, and His goodness, and gave us an example that I must follow.

His faith in the God he had come to know and his love, placed Abraham in one of the heroes of the faith described in Hebrews 11. God required of us a total surrender: he asked for everything. Abraham believed, obeyed and waited. This is how our faith should be: unshakable, undoubted, without questioning, trusting in the plans and in the Will of God, who knows exactly what is best for each one. God used the faith of Abraham with an example for all who follow him as the only way to reach Him. Genesis 15: 6 says, "And he believed the Lord, and it was counted for righteousness." This truth is the basis of the Christian faith, as reiterated in Romans 4: 3 and James 2:23. The justice that was imputed to Abraham is the same justice accredited to us when we received by the sacrifice that God proved for our sins - Jesus Christ. "To him who knew no sin, he made us sin for us, that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him." (2 Corinthians 5:21) By this obedience Abraham is called today the father of the Faith, but he is also one of the models that teach us how to fulfill the Will of God.

The blessing was not the only one for Abraham, since it is also said that all the peoples of the earth are blessed in you (that is, through Abraham). This should make you and you sit down and take notes. Because you and you are part of 'all the peoples of the earth' - regardless of our religion, our origin, the place where we live, our social condition, or the language we speak. The scope of the promise of a blessing includes all of us who are alive today! How? When? What kind of blessing? This is not clearly stated here, but this is the birth of something that is important to you and me. I know that the first parts of this promise have come true, we can have confidence that this last part has been addressed to us also became a reality.
The obedience of a man led him to be blessed him, to bless the nations and that is why God asked this great, extreme, exaggerated and incomprehensible demand of confidence to Abraham. God did not want him to kill Isaac, he was just testing the love that was in Abraham and his faith in Jehovah. In fact, extrabiblical commentaries of Israeli historians say that the young Isaac, upon learning that he would be a sacrifice to Jehovah, did not fear but said to his Father, "do it and let Jehovah be sanctified in me" but God did not want the young man to die, God I proved the faith to both so that all the nations of the earth would be blessed through that faith.

Then the angel of the Lord cried out from heaven and said: Abraham, Abraham. And he replied: Here I am. And he said: Do not stretch out your hand over the boy, do not do anything; because I already know that you fear God, because you did not refuse me your son, your only son."
Genesis 22: 11-12.
God often got us into things that we do not really like, but God always has a plan for us that consists in giving us something more important than what we already have. Remember that the Bible says that our faith is likely with problems in the same way that gold is tested with fire after that test, our faith becomes much more beautiful than gold and became a faith so unmovable that glorify and praise the name of the Lord: "so that the authenticity of your faith, being much more precious than the gold that perishes, even though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor and glorify the revelation of Jesus Christ." 1 Peter 1: 7.

Obeying God's plan is equivalent to saying: "I love you".
Having the correct perspective of obedience allows us to endure any difficulty.
And God pours out His blessings on those who obey Him.

Faith kept Abraham faith shall keep #steemchurch
Now it came about after these things, that God tested Abraham, and said to him, " Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am." 2 He said, "Take now your son, your only son, whom you love, Isaac, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I will tell you." 3 So Abraham rose early in the morning and saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him and Isaac his son; and he split wood for the burnt offering, and arose and went to the place of which God had told him. 4 On the third day Abraham raised his eyes and saw the place from a distance. 5 Abraham said to his young men, "Stay here with the donkey, and I and the lad will go over there; and we will worship and return to you." 6 Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son, and he took in his hand the fire and the knife. So the two of them walked on together. 7 Isaac spoke to Abraham his father and said, "My father!" And he said, "Here I am, my son." And he said, "Behold, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?" 8 Abraham said, "God will provide for Himself the lamb for the burnt offering, my son." So the two of them walked on together.

9 Then they came to the place of which God had told him; and Abraham built the altar there and arranged the wood, and bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. 10 Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to slay his son. 11 But the angel of the LORD called to him from heaven and said, "Abraham, Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am." 12 He said, "Do not stretch out your hand against the lad, and do nothing to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me." 13 Then Abraham raised his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him a ram caught in the thicket by his horns; and Abraham went and took the ram and offered him up for a burnt offering in the place of his son. 14 Abraham called the name of that place The LORD Will Provide, as it is said to this day, "In the mount of the LORD it will be provided."

15 Then the angel of the LORD called to Abraham a second time from heaven, 16 and said, " By Myself I have sworn, declares the LORD, because you have done this thing and have not withheld your son, your only son, 17 indeed I will greatly bless you, and I will greatly multiply your seed as the stars of the heavens and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your seed shall possess the gate of their enemies. 18 " In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice." 19 So Abraham returned to his young men, and they arose and went together to Beersheba; and Abraham lived at Beersheba.

God has a plan for each one of us, we just have to obey it and the blessings will be great. beautiful post.

That's right, just listen to the voice of God and follow it to the end. I'm glad you liked it, blessings

Excellent post @mirnajvs a genuine teaching, that if we put our Faith in God he will always take care of us and free us from any circumstance that comes our way, giving victory in everything, we just have to obey, I bless her. Greetings.

You are right, activate faith is what we have to do. Greetings.

It takes someone that really has a burning heart of love for God that can take such step of sacrificing the only child.

God test Abraham with that, and Abraham obeyed God with strong faith in God who can give and take.

His obedient launch him to another realm of glory.

That's right, by obeying we move to new levels with God and that is without a doubt the greatest blessing. Greetings.

Test of faith. ....!!!

Many times, God give us something, tests us with it so He can magnify that thing. Because of fear of losing it all, we cling on it so tightly that we forget that our God can provide a greater one.

This has reduced great men to beggars, the little money they earn, they find it difficult to contribute to the things of God and this makes way for the finance devouring enemy who'd come and steal, kill and destroy.

This is how you say, our faith is proven but to the one who wins the award is great. Blessings.

God sometimes test us in order to know our level of faith in Him.
Abraham was tested by God to sacrifice his only son to Him, Is not as if God really needed the blood of Jacob but He really want to test his faith and his obedience.
Abraham pass the test of faith and obedience and God made available what to be used for the sacrifice and also grant Abraham a new level of relationship and blessing.

We need obedience and faith to really walk with God and enjoy Him

Thus, obedience is an open door to intimate knowledge of the presence of God. Thanks for comment, blessings.

This is a great and wonderful message. obedience to God's command gave God the glory He deserves and is an example for us of how to glorify God. Thank you for reading and commenting. Many blessings!

As Christians we should love God with all our heart, with all our might and with every fibre of our being. The love of God encompasses us in ways we can never imagine and in return we should place all our trust, faith and hope in Him and then like Abraham, we shall flourish like the tress by the riverside.

Amen, planted in the river of God. Blessings!

I think it's the most tragic decision a person can make. I put myself in the shoes of Abraham and just think about it, it overwhelms my soul .. Good message God bless you and continue to obtain wisdom

Amen, thank you very much for reading.

Thanks for sharing with us all

Why then would God give this command? The point was for Abraham to demonstrate that he trusted God completely and placed him above all else, even his own son. 1 Though God of course already knew that Abraham had faith in him, it was necessary for Abraham to prove it through action. "His faith was made complete by what he did" (James 2:21-23 ). Because of his actions, not only God but Abraham, his family and future generations knew that Abraham trusted God. This trust was important because it indicated that Abraham had the proper relationship with God (he was treating God as God deserves to be treated) and could benefit from God's good plans for his life.

You're right, as I said in the post, God made that request to Abraham because he was testing his faith and his heart. Thanks for reading, may God bless you.

God asked Abraham to sacrifice Isaac not because he really wanted Isaac dead but because:
1.God wanted to test Abraham faith in Him

  1. God also wanted to check his obedient towards Him and lastly.
  2. God wanted to check if Abraham has taken Isaac as a god to himself I.e if he value Isaac more than Him.

Most a time God actually test us to see if that particular thing He has given us has not come a god to us. Some people value their wealth, houses, cars etc more than God which is not suppose to be.

Check your life today is there anything you are taking more than God?
If you were Abraham would you have obeyed God by sacrificing Isaac?

It was a test for Abraham that God asked him to do that, but such was his faith that without hesitation or thinking twice he obeyed the command of the Lord, that love and unique devotion for the creator that inspired to be tested and prove his royalty. Inspiring ,regards.

Thanks so much for reading! Greetings.

Abraham walked with God, i there is two way round it. To walk with you must willing to sacrifice for God.. Abraham was willing and determine.
Christians should aim to walk with God.. Live a sacrificial life..

You are absolutely right, a life of dedication that brings a reward to have God living within us. Blessings!

It takes somebody that truly has a consuming heart of affection for God that can make such stride of giving up the single youngster.

God test Abraham with that, and Abraham obeyed God with solid confidence in God who can give and take.

His faithful dispatch him to another domain of wonderfulness.

This has diminished incredible men to hobos, the minimal expenditure they win, they think that its hard to add to the things of God and this clears a path for the fund eating up foe who'd come and take, slaughter and devastate.

Excellent teaching @mirnajvs.
I was very shocked by what he wrote in the post:
Abraham believed, obeyed and waited. This is how our faith should be: unshakable, undoubted, without questioning, trusting in the plans and in the Will of God, who knows exactly what is best for each one.
These three things: Believing, obeying and waiting are fundamental in our walk with God but sometimes we forget to put them into practice, thank God for giving us this type of teaching that strengthens our faith in Him.
Blessings.
