The flight to Poland from Minneapolis (after counting the two connections in Atlanta and Amsterdam) is about 13 hours.

Reading material for the trip:
A story detailing the horrific conditions in Auschwitz (one of the Nazi Death Camps), and focusing on the inner existential meaning that life holds for some people, the power which permits the perseverance of existence despite an unimaginably bleak, dire, and painful future.
I have read this book before, perhaps 10 years ago...
Reading it again, just days before visiting this horror of our past, feels unsettlingly appropriate.
In order to fully process and absorb the scope of the true darkness that humanity is capable of, the lessons of our past must be reviewed...

Such is the mortal sin of humanity.
If it meant saving your own child from the slow, torturous death of enslavement in the camps, can you honestly say that you would not serve as one of the torturers?
What if you could save your entire village, of 250 people, from carrying 100 pound bags of sand back and forth, given no food and no water, knowing that if you collapsed you would be executed by a gunshot to the back of the head?
Except YOU are holding the gun.
Could you be the executioner to save the lives of everyone in your entire village?
How about city?
A country?
The WORLD?
Given the right reasons,
YOU COULD BE A MONSTER.
Weigh that in your conscience...
