Let's talk about Steemfest Tickets

in #steemfest6 years ago (edited)

This should be self-explanatory but it seems that it isn't and what I just saw made me a bit upset.

The Steemfest ticket is available in multiple price-regions. Starting from 50% of the price going all the way up to 200%.

Now these price steps are very important to enable even small users/people who don't have a lot of Steem/Fiat, to come to Steemfest.

And it should be very well known that the standard ticket for everybody is not the Plankton one, but the Regular ticket.

This is because the plankton tickets are subsidised by sponsors and those who buy the tickets above Regular.

Which means, nobody is forced to pay more than the Regular ticket, but if you buy the Plankton or Minnow ticket and you're actually a dolphin, orca or even whale:

Then that is a really big dick move!

And this is what made me a bit upset. I won't say any names, but it seems that some people tried to save money by buying reduced tickets, even though they had much more than enough for a regular in their wallets.

And to prove that I'm not just spitting b.s: I've bought the regular ticket yesterday and given away 150 Steem to @theuxyeti so he can buy himself a ticket, but I still have 150 Steem left from my Anniversary post, which I'll either give away or I'll buy the 2nd ticket as silver version.

Buying the Steem tickets is currently quite expensive and so far it's the biggest purchase I've made (since I actually don't cash anything out - still hodling all my Steempower).

But this is a matter of principles and ethics!

TL;DR: Steemfest tickets are available in different price steps. The reduced tickets are being subsidised by sponsors and patrons through higher ticket tiers. (120%+) And are only for users who can't afford the Regular price without giving away a big chunk of their own Steempower.

But if you can afford it "easily" and you still buy the reduced tickets, well then ...

So, with that said:

I'm very glad that so many actual "planktons" and "minnows" are coming to Steemfest. I was one less than a year ago and the wallet size says nothing about you as a person.

And a big thank you to all those who are subsidising the reduced tickets. You're the real heroes!

See you at Steemfest!

This is true, @therealwolf allocated 150 Steem to assist me for my ticket. While my post is 2 days away from being accrued i think i May still fall short. I’m stunned by the reaction though from the community. Over 1600 votes already and many of my online chat friends have assisted my chance to get to SF as well. Truly grateful. I didn’t realize the scale changes everyday, so i May be 50 Steem short but I’ll get there. Truly thankful! Thank you again @therealwolf

I've sent you 450 STEEM so you can buy the ticket before the price increases. Please repay it to me as soon as you get the post-rewards & the rest.

See you at Steemfest! :)

paid for the ticket, you are bad ass. thank you for reading my mind without worry. I can't believe i am going to steem fest in poland holy cow, and holy crap. I just sent back 60%, once the post has posted i will send over the rest. Thank you again.

Wow @therealwolf really loving this gesture! You show a lot of trust in other people loving it. Way better to read positive stories like this than a * peep* who is abusing the system like what happened to @surfermarley.

Lookin forward to see you both at Steemfest @therealwolf and @theuxyeti!

Hang loose 🤙

I know what you mean, positivity is important.

See you at Steemfest!

It is indeed!

See you at Steemfest 🤙

Thats so nobly @therealwolf, i'm stunned! You are a great man !!! We also want to get on SF. Could you explain in detail what We need for that?

De verdad que seriá una experiencia única asistir al SteemFest @therealwolf, lastima que en estos momentos me sea imposible asistir pero a lo largo de este año trabajare muy fuerte para ver puedo lograr asistir al del año 2019

The fact that these prices are divided in steps but not connected to for example the contents of your Steem Wallet means they price steps are given to us on the basis of trust. It's a shame that trust is being abused by some. I've also seen the opposite: people who I clearly see as contenders for the Plankton tickets (coming from Africa as Minnows) thinking about buying the Minnow or even regular prized tickets.

In the end it will probably even out but it's still an awful thing to see happening.

hey, I have also just booked my ticket (the regular one) and am looking forward to being there in person. and finally having a face to face chat as well.
As for the rest of the 150 you have left over, why not use it as a donation to the @t-r-f its the fund that is used to help steemians with their travel costs. I have made a smal donation myself but I would say that your 150 would really help out...
just thinking out loud though...

That's an interesting idea. See you at Steemfest!

looking forward to it

I won't be able to go to the Steemfest but till then @t-r-f will be a beneficiary of my posts with 10% going there. I'm only "micro-plancton" but a cent is a cent :)

To be honest, with a real-life interaction, bigger spendings have substantially bigger impact and stake.

Assuming you want to pay in fiat, those numbers add up insanely heavily - from my current monthly salary for instance, as a whole, maybe I can buy the Minnow ticket, but even that's not sure, especially adding extra costs. (not planning to attend, just mentioning for scale)

I can agree in that being a whale/orca likely correlates with bigger income but still, the ways people try saving might be different, with different priorities.

I agree about ethics, too, but in the pyramid of needs, such high-level ideas are not as prioritized as a stable and secure living.

All I want to say is that maybe someone's perspective who is, or used to be poor, can be wildly different.

If one can afford a ticket/travel with your steem power without using one's fiat salary/savings . There is no reason to cheap out. it's douchy to not want to spend one's steem for ticket when getting that steem literally costs nothing in fiat.

To be honest regular ticket is my monthly payment :D I'm working entire month to have about 600 euro :D

I powered down my Steem power to oblivion so as to afford going to Steemfest 2. My salary accounts for a small fraction in the whole expense so that's cool. Don't think i will go this year though.

If the STEEM price will be much higher, that will be easier to buy even the cheapest ticket :D

I saw this too somewhere. And there's me freaking out that I might not be able to buy a minnow ticket (being a minnow) at the increased price, when the initial 333 Euro would already be steep for me (that's why I didn't buy one yet, just don't have it! Powering down isn't going to help me much now either). And I had no clue that I was even 'allowed' to buy a plankton ticket....Yes, I was among the last 100 who bought their tickets in the last few days before Steemfest last year. But there was a very good reason for it: I just didn't have the funds to buy it earlier. And I'm sure a lot of those 100 were in the same boat.

Some minnows literallly wring their steem power dry to afford going to Steemfest, which i applaud of course, it's the best thing to spend one's steem on.

But if one is a dolphin or above and buy the cheapest ticket they can just because they can, that person isn't a Steemian at heart. I hope no one does that though, and if anyone does i hope they get called out. It's really a dick move.

100% in agreement here @therealwolf - resteemed.

is this just a ticket to enter the fest or an all exclusive with hotel , food, etc? why does it cost 500+ euro?

Hotel costs are not covered, but as far as I am concerned food during the day + events are covered :)

I bought a regular ticket even though it worked out expensive due to the low Steem price. If I'd waited a few days it would have been cheaper. I still consider it good value from my experience in Lisbon last year. It may seem a lot, but you would pay a lot more for other technology conferences that don't even include all the food, drink and entertainment you get at Steemfest. I hardly spent any money at the actual event last time. I've paid for it with Steem I earned and I consider that bonus money.

Just wondering which ticket level should people buy who are accompanying members but who arent actually members themselves? And what about people who are minnows who have in the past powered down from dolphin level? How about the ticket buyers who made bought most of their SP at high Steem prices, should they pay the same as those who bought in at very low Steem prices?
Point is, the ticketing structure is bollocks, as are assumptions about what people can in reality afford and not, and then name calling?
Life's too short. Please don't join the ranks of the Steemit Puritanical Society, there are enough self righteous, holier than thou, self appointed guardians on here already.

I agree, I’ve also seen very large accounts participating in ticket contest give aways.. I mean, if you have 5k liquid Steem sitting in your account do you really need to compete with minnows for a ticket? I don’t believe in a gift society and don’t think anyone is owed anything.. but seeing some take advantage is frustrating. Which is why I purchased a regular ticket as a Minnow and will actually be giving one away to a fellow Minnow as well. Time to be the change I want to see in the world.
