The new Raspberry Pi 4 comes with a more powerful CPU, 1,2 or 4 GB of RAM, Gigabit Ethernet controller, 2x micro HDMI ports that supports dual 4K montir setup and it changed the micro usb port to Type C.
It is compatible with it's previous versions, if you want to upgrade one of your projects you can just replace the board its back compatible.
