You read that correctly. This is one of the most badass nostalgic power trips you can ever have (unless you are really young) The "App" is developed by Felix Rieseberg, Staff Engineer at Slack and Member of the Electron Maintainers Community.

v1.1 With Floppy Disk Support!

The latest version was released yesterday on GitHub. The download range from 94.8 MB to 129 MB and the source code is also available for download.

The Power Trip

Most online publications like engadget.com and theverge.com talk about the nostalgia. For me it is the idea that some of the computers at the time wasn't powerful enough to run this OS and now it's an "App" where I can use a whole set of features while multi-tasking and sometimes my browser is actually more resource intensive.

It Is The 23rd Birthday!

Windows 95 (codenamed Chicago) is a consumer-oriented operating system developed by Microsoft. It was released on August 24, 1995

Oh my, this OS just took me back down memory lane, It's something that reminds us all how it all started. Great hunt and thanks for bringing this here.

I just read this article then I seen you posted...remembered you posted a lot of stuff on vaccines as a cause for Autism...someone posted this today and it's quite alarming and would appear to be a more reasonable explanation as to why the raise in autism. The article linked in the post is lengthy but a good read.

Thanks a lot for sharing. I'm not a biology expert. But knowing that Glyphosate binds minerals was enough of a reason to be scared of it. Many health issues are related to lack of nutrients. That alone should be a reason to claim Glyphosate as non-safe.

History, they say, is written by the winners. Windows, and DOS before, were largely plagiarized. DOS 1.0 I remember well, as I found it easier to use CP/M to setup a network for Metropinion Inc. in Austin, TX in 1987. I used Osborne portable PCs, with the keyboards that snapped over the face of the suitcase sized computer with it's ~7 inch green monochrome monitor and dual 5.25" floppy disk drives.

DR DOS had come out with a rival OS to CP/M, and Microshaft just stole it, and didn't even change the name much.

Then Apple came out with the Macintosh, with it's slick GUI. Microshaft stole that too, and called it Windows. The architecture of the Intel machines was different enough that the Apple GUI needed significant workarounds and was unwieldy, and this is why Windows95 was born.

The only reason Microshaft became the go to OS for corporations is piracy. Gates was deeply aware of the hacking community, and their distaste for proprietary and copyrighted software (thus birthing Linux and the OSS movement) and used it to invite them - sotto voce - to crack his OS.

He squawked loudest about 'piracy' and was front and center in the BSA (Business Software Alliance, an early anti-piracy outfit), which he knew was hackle-raising to the 'information must be free' crowd. Then he instituted the most dismal and weak security measures for all his products, practically ensuring hackers would chortle with glee as they successfully and easily cracked his feeble security measures and used his products, just to spite him.

Since the IT industry was run by those same hackers, and they used Windows on their personal systems, all their apps thus were ported to his OS. When they did work for the Fortune 500 they wanted to use their apps, and had their clients use Windows so their apps would work and they would use a software environment they were familiar with.

That is why Windows became the go to OS.

Evil genius.

Thanks!

Bill Gates really is a genius. But I'd rather call him opportunistic than evil. He sent IBM to the guy who build the original OS and when he screwed up th deal and IBM re-contacted Gates, he just bought the ripoff company and signed a non-exclusive deal. When the Gary Kildall was finally given a chance to compete, he made his OS 6 times more expensive than DOS.

It's a really sad story that's almost like a Greek tragedy with an unfortunate death.

Bill Gates also compromised the quality of the eco-system for reaching critical mass in adoption. Steve Jobs had some major issues with this philosophy.

This is kinda funny. It's especially funny how he says it was sort of an accident on the GitHub. I hope more "apps" show up to run these old operating systems. There are a ton of cool games for them that otherwise will be lost to the throws of history. There are also a few random apps that are pretty cool that most people barely remember as well.

It's also just fun and feels nice to see the way ho old people experienced the technology.

Old people? XD I think a number of us that aren't that old remember it. I can't say that I necessarily miss it though. It's probably not quite as slow now though. I remember 98 a lot more though. I don't have nostalgia over any of those old operating systems. They all have their benefits and annoyances. I prefer my newer faster annoyances.

That's fucking great, I wish I could run XP again, Windows 10 is a virus and it killed my old XP machine.

XP is many times larger. The biggest problem is that electron apps have extremely unoptimized code. I'm not an expert but I think you'll need a high end PC/Laptop to do the same with XP. It would be nice if someone end up making that.

Are we going backward?

Nope. We have turned old OS into a simple tiny app.

Oh, that is good

Congratulations!
