I believe you are far from selfish. As everybody else, you have limited voting power and it is simply not possible to upvote everybody who asks for it. I know some users who flag people who ask for upvotes. And I would definitely flag people who insult me.
I think on steemit, more than on other social networks, respect is the basis currency to make this a nice place.
