Not sure if people doesn't likes sports, or just avoids to discuss in public.Mainstream sports are structured in a bi-polar way, like "supporters of A which hates B", and "supporters of B which hates A". So to discuss about sport often ends in a hell of a fight, insults, and more.
So I am not sure people doesn't like sports on steemit: I suspect people doesn't likes to end in a perpetual flamewar. It is not so common to find supporters with sense of humour, which are able to connect cheering with fun.
