My son was getting into this years ago. We bought him Maya (sp?) to help him learn. He came up with some good stuff for the time, but went a different direction. It was amazing how much work he'd put into just a few seconds of rendered work.

Hey cool to know @anotherjoe! Maya was probably the best bet for your son as it is currently one of the most used 3d packages in the industry. Hope your son is thriving in the new direction he has taken.
