It's a little interesting that Steemit competes with Reddit but uses it for authentication

Maybe Steemit could enforce something like phone number verification instead? It is far more difficult to come across a phone number than an e-mail address. Sure, there are free ways to get phone numbers, though they're limited. Creating a Reddit account is free, and they are cheap to acquire if you need one with positive karma.
