Every platform has its bad sheep and Steemit is not an exception. Number of users on Steemit are increasing day by day but not all of them are computer geeks. So to target these newbies is comparatively easy.

I would share my findings to help you secure your Steemit account:

Phishing Attack
It is one of most prominent attack by Black Hat Programmers and i personally saw many cases of it on Steemit. It works in a very tricky way. To perform major operations on Steemit, you have to login again with your master key or WIF. That's good for security purpose but you first have to make sure that you are currently entering your credentials on Steemit.

What happens is that you are presented with an interface similar to that of Steemit login. You think everything is just normal and blindly give your credentials to the hacker. Never do that again. You have to make sure that URL is correct and green connection of secure is visible on your browser.

Master Key Leak
The only rules you would have read when registering new account were never lose your keys but still it happens. You have to be extra careful whenever you have to use your Master key. Always use posting or active key for third-party apps. You can find them in your account's Wallet> Permissions tab.
If you enter your master key by mistake in memo while transfer than without wasting any second, quickly reset your Master key.

I hope all of you stay safe on Steemit.

This information is of utter most importance as many people are getting hacked as we speak. "Mater Key Leak" Typo?

One more important thing is to remember besides the master key is the email you used for registering on Steemit as it's needed to do a recovery!

I didn't know that recovery can be done via email. Thanks again for sharing that and also for correcting me, much appreciated

thanks for sharing. helpful for some minnnows.

Don't log in with your master key!! Use your posting key to log on.

Thank you so much for mentioning the alternate and more safer way to log in.

Love your profile image ;)

Important information. Thanks for sharing!!

A lot of these attacks or attempt are very easy to see even for a person with my techy skills and knowledge. Thanks for the info and stay safe out there

Informative and useful! Thanks for bringing attention to this :) I saw it happen a couple months ago to another user. They accidentally put their master key into the memo field in a transaction, and literally 5 minutes later someone had logged into their account and started transferring 1000s in steem out of the account!

Thank you so much for the feedback, really appreciate it and stay safe...

Also, store your keys safely, have paper backups. I've heard so many horror stories about people losing their keys (and their steem), or password because of this. Duplication of keys, is key to success. (pun intended)

I forgot to mention this important point. Thank you for bringing that up.

Well it's not about "hacking" per se. But still valuable...

Nicely written, each newbie should read this.

Thank you for kind feedback

All these advances in technology are greta in so many ways but sadly the advances of those who want to manipulate the system are as equally rapid

A great post and a reminder for us all to be very careful before clicking any links and when signing in to ensure its the correct site

I agree, thank so much for the feedback and important reminder

Indeed it is very important :)

Good post and keep it up.

I'm afraid someone will do something wrong with my steemit account :( ((because I'm not a computer savvy person)

You don't have to be afraid. Just follow some security precautions and they are not difficult at all

Good explanation. I think a lot of people don't understand the different passwords that you can use on steemit. I always try to use my active/posting password and only use the master as a last resort. The one thing I really like about steemit is that it takes 13 weeks to power down, so even if you get hacked, the attacker can't just transfer your money out right away, and you will have a chance to stop it

Power down process starts after 1 week and completed in 13 week. So if somehow hacker got the master key, he eventually has full control for 13 weeks also.
Anyways stay safe and thank you so much for the feedback.

Sure, but if a hacker gets access to any of your crypto wallet accounts, your coins are gone in an instant, at least with steemit you have some time to stop the process. Cheers
