Wow, 400 signed up for a meetup sounds amazing! I would think that you should be able to get a lot of "local commerce" going using Steem starting out with a substantial group of that size.
Steemit is a fantastic way to begin in the crypto world. If you add http://bitshares.org to that, then you can expand from Steem and SBD out to a much wider range of crypto as well.
If you read some of the earlier articles in this series, you might want to share some of the quicker ways for new members to "onboard" to Steemit at a nominal cost, but faster than a "standard" sign-up.
