Telepathy, is it real?

in #steemit8 years ago

Hello all,

I was lucky enough te be born with my twin sister Charlotte. We are fraternal twins and we were born only eight minutes apart.

When we were growing up together we always had a strong connection with each other, but on multiple accounts that connection was so strong that we could feel if one of us was sad or if something was wrong, even when we were miles apart from each other. For example, last week I suddenly got this strange feeling in my stomach and couldn’t stop thinking of my sister. So I called her by phone and asked if something was wrong. She told me that she just heard that the dance club were she works will close its doors and she would lose her job. So were did this feeling come from? Can it be telepathy?

Telepathy

Telepathy comes from the Greek words tele meaning "distant" and -patheia meaning "feeling, perception or experience” and is seen as sending information from one person to the other without physical interaction or speech. From the early 19th century there are reports and demonstrations of telepathy, mostly on mind reading and dream telepathy, but most of them have been unmasked as frauds or debunked by science. These days telepathy is often seen in sciencefiction and superhero movies.

Twin telepathy

One of the more famous stories about twin telepathy that made the news, is the story about Gemma Houghton. In 2009 she and her twin sister Leanne were home alone when the latter Leanne decided to take a bath. After a short while Gemma got a strong feeling that something was wrong with Leanne. When she got upstairs she found here sister submerged and unconscious in the bath. Dragging her out she administered CPR and she luckily revived her sister and called for an ambulance. Afterwards she told the paramedics” I just got this feeling to check on her, so I went upstairs and I saw her submerged in the bath”. If Emma had waited any longer her sister would have died.

There are more stories where twins have a strong connection, even physical. One story is of identical twin brothers, where one would break his ankle and his brother got a swelling in the same place, or the man who suddenly got a pain is his chest and although there was nothing wrong with him, his twin brother who was in another city had a heart attack.

Unfortunately none of these events can be proven. A fair number of scientist in the world have done different experiments in order to try and prove the existence of telepathy, but none were conclusive. However we cannot dismiss the fact that there are many cases where some form of telepathy or ESP (extra sensory perception) appears to be present.

So the question that remains is, if it’s not telepathy, then where do twins (or people in general) get these strong intuitions from?
