I have officially been on Steemit for one week and have collected my first rewards from my intro post.
Steemit is the place to be, folks.
I love this place! Now that I have gone through the whole process of posting, building up a hopefully genuine community, received rewards, and transfered rewards, I feel like I can give a good impression of the place.
I have been waiting until I got my first reward until I went nuts and told all the people ever to join me here on Steemit. Now I've got that.
Excitement.
Currently I have 148 followers in 7 days. I don't do follow-for-follow and I try and let people know that right off the bat (check out my Hopes and Intentions for Steemit). My secret to that is - be genuine - reply to people's comments and go searching for people with your same interests. There are a couple of neat groups that help newbies also.
It's very exciting to watch your post grow in value. It's even more exciting to meet people with like interests and learn new things every day, every time you click on a new post.
There's a lot to learn.
There is definitely a high learning curve here. It definitely is very confusing to the beginner, but you get it kind of fast. And the things you don't get right away, either come with time, or I guess they're not so important.
Some not so great things.
Some negative things about Steemit is, there's lots of spam "Follow me, I follow you.", information and how-tos seem to be really complicated and they could use better laymen's terms, feeds and blogs should be filterable (so you don't have to see all the resteems), and a real simple TL;DR of how the wallet stuff works would be REALLY great.
Some things about getting your first reward.
- The earnings under your blog is in Steem Dollars, not USD.
- The earnings stated under your blog is not how much is coming to you. A decent sized portion will go to the "curators", people who have upvoted and resteemed your blog. (This just took me off guard, not a big deal.)
- There is an option when you're publishing your post to choose between 100% of the earnings go to Steem Dollars (SBD), 50% goes to SBD and 50% goes to your Steem Power, or not to claim any earnings made from the post.
- Because of the above, you do not get to choose how much $ goes to Steem, Steem Power, Steem Dollars, or Steem Savings. In order to do so, you have to switch some monies from Steem Dollars into Steem, and then you can distribute from there.
- It's faster to switch Steem Dollars to Steem in the Market rather than doing it directly in your wallet (where it takes 3.5 days or something).
THE BEST PART.
The best part is the community. I have met some real great people in these 7 days who make me want to come back for more. There's a huge #homesteading community, and it's growing everyday. There's a ton of help for newbies, and no one yet has made me feel dumb for asking a question.
Then there's the bonus. Which is commenting, sharing, and creating content can make you some money. That's usually why people come here, but the reason they stay is for the community. At least, that's why I'm staying.
Thank you to everyone who has made my experience a positive one so far here on Steemit. You all deserve big ol' hugs, but you'll just have to imagine it, cause I'm not a hugger. :D Ha.

hey farmstead! I sent this link to my sister today, it seems like he has a lot of really good tutorials.
The Steem / SBD / SP is pretty confusing at first, it gets clearer..Steem = SP, except Steem is liquid and can be moved to an exchange to sell, or transfered to another account, and SP is vested in your account and is the only one that affects your voting power, and takes 13 weeks to withdraw fully.
The SBD is an attempt at pegging Steem to the USD, so it's still 'held' in Steem, but stuck at the price of USD, for example if you had $20 of SBD, theoretically it would stay at $20 no matter what the price of steem did...but obviously it doesn't seem to be working that way lately, I don't have any idea why.
I was at least catching on to which is what thankfully. However, I'm not 100% sure they need ALL THREE. Maybe a little overkill? Haha.

I second the need to filter out resteems. Sometimes I just want to see what the actual person has come up with, especially if they are someone that I make a point to support.

You are having good luck with response of your blogs. (either that or the homesteading community is really inclusive). I had 2 posts do well in my first week, both having to do with art, so while I intended to show more gardening initially, I ended up doing more art posts. It's been sort of inconsistent since, so I don't know anymore. :-(
I do think the homesteading community is pretty great.
That's okay that you're doing art posts! I'm sorry not much is gaining traction. I doubt I'll get another great post like my intro. But I am trying to post daily (probably not so much on the weekends, unless I've got something pre-prepared).
I'm trying to join communities that I am interested in as well. Have you seen the Gardening Friend Train? There's also one by the same guy, @daddykirbits, for homesteading.
It's definitely hard to stay consistent. But, I don't think a blog has to be one topic exclusively. Just continue to write what you're passionate about and what makes you happy. Be sure to include your mistakes too! Be genuine and transparent. :D
Show some more gardening stuff, man. :D
Hey great post, I was also confused by some of the things which you pointed out confused you.
Quick question about upvotes. Are all upvotes equal to those doing them or is there any incentive to be one of the earlier people to upvote? I guess basically what I'm saying is are you rewarded anymore for being one of the first people to upvote or notice a good quality post?

yes, the reward is higher if you find and upvote a post early which gets popular later but there's little to no reward for upvoting post that is already popular

That's funny, there's lots of things I hear where people are like not sure why but its best to do it this way, but don't quote me on that lol. It is kinda confusing and overwhelming at first.
I guess the reason for my question is if I vote on something that already has 100 upvotes it's already popular but I thought there may be some incentive for spotting something you think will be popular before its gotten popular
Here's from the Steemit FAQ
How is the reward pool split between authors and curators?
Up to 25% of a post's payout is awarded to curators (the people who upvoted the post) as a reward for discovering the content. The other 75% is awarded to the author. If curators vote for a post within the first 30 minutes of it being created, a portion of their curation reward is added to the author payout. This portion is linear to the age of the post between 0 and 30 minutes. Therefore upvoting at 15 minutes old will donate half of your potential curation reward to the author.
Interesting to me, this says the opposite of what I said, that it's better to do it right away!
I read all these things and the reasonings behind it just don't stick with me. Haha
The "vote at 30 minutes" thing has to do with the algorithms for who gets how much in the payout. I've read it a couple of times so I sort of understand it, but I couldn't explain it.
Haha do you have a link to what you read? I'd love to try and figure it out too. Hahahaha. Cause I probably wont be able to QUITE understand it either.

Yeah Steemit seems like a whole new experience. I'm really excited that I got rewards and I managed to get Bitcoin from them. Its been a really big learning curve but I guess starting and reading a lot of posts will get you on track. Thanks for sharing

Fellow newbie here. Thanks for sharing your experience so far. I'm still figuring it out, and don't understand most of the terminology but I'm learning. I'm going to look for posts about things that I am interested in as well. Would you mind suggesting some newbie communities to join?
Hm, well, I'm finding and joining communities that I'm interested in. I used the search feature and tags list to search for gardening and homesteading. So it really depends on your interests, but thats where I'd start! :)
