Yes, uploading pictures is janky at the moment. There are technical reasons, but bottom line, the site is still Beta. I don't think you're a spoiled child for wanting something so basic. It just hasn't been a priority for development, apparently. Welcome to steemit!!
Out of curiosity, which article brought you in?
So I write on medium. Did a search on Twitter to find other Medium users then found a tweet asking if steemit was legit. I guess it was a Rolling Stone article.
To add a picture, you can simply use good old HTML code like this:
<img src="https://link.to.your.picture.jpg">To quote someone, you can use Markdown like this:

Thank you. My issue was with having to have my pictures hosted some place else apart from my PC or mobile but I guess I'll have to make do with what's available. Thanks for the tips.
