Who does not like ice cream? A refreshingly sweet meal in the blistering weather. But, have you ever felt thirsty again after consuming it? Quoted from Health.com, a professor in the department of endocrinology, diabetes, and nutrition at Boston University School of Medicine, dr. Caroline Apovian says this is related to the spike in blood sugar levels in the body.
"If you put sugar into the system (digestion), when you first get into the stomach then it will go into the bloodstream," he said.
Once the sugar particles reach the bloodstream, the water will move out of the cell and into the blood to restore the balance of the system. Along with the loss of water, the brain will catch a signal indicating that the body needs more water again. This process is what makes you thirsty.
"Because glucose is absorbed by the intestine and into the bloodstream quite quickly, you may feel thirsty within 5 or 10 minutes," added Dr. Caroline.
When you feel thirsty after eating ice cream or other sweet foods, dr Caroline recommend to immediately drink a glass of water even though the desire to drink sweet as sweet as juices still appear.
"You're not only confusing your body's balance system when putting more sugar into the body but also getting a lot of calories," he asserted.
