Video Postings - without or limited commentary

in #steemit8 years ago

No problem, unless your intent is to profit. WAIT- Is not to profit, why you are here? The solution is simple.

Add a paragraph or two commentary, describing what the video is about, but more than just a description, an opinion. Therefore you have made the case that you will profit from your commentary and the video is a reference to that. Making all profits yours. To be safe you should have a minimum of 50 words.

While I have mentioned this to @steemcleaners, the group responsible for tracking down and managing abuse, verbal and legal, the opinion still seems varied. It was mentioned, "those posts wont make any money anyway," but I'm not sure that is necessarily true. If I started posting you-tubes biggest hits, my guess is that I could make a few bucks with zero effort.

I understand the argument, "we don't censor," let the community decide. Yet Steemit is concerned with plagiarism with the copy/paste; so much so that it created and funded the @steemcleaners to bring awareness to new users that plagiarism is frowned upon and may result in further action.

As I go through the posts on the NEW page, reading and looking for the place to apply my votes, I feel like I have entered twitter. Suddenly there are tons of these posts with a video and maybe a line of text. I know it is a direct result of rapid growth, of new users. I am concerned, for I suspect soon the rapid growth to be exponential. It could be very quickly thousands, and tens of thousands. Whereas I believe if we can bring the same type of awareness to these users, it serves to educate / advise / protect the user while increasing quality and shows that Steemit does not support this behavior.

I would like to suggest that we all think about this further. I believe this can easily be turned around before the next growth spurs.

As you think about it, be reminded, its about paying/getting paid for something belonging to another just like plagiarism.

We need your opinion.

If I click on a post, and all I see is a video.. if there is no commentary explaining what the video contains, and a reason why I should hit play, I just exit the post and look for something else to vote up. I don't have time to sit and watch videos to find out why I should watch the video.

exactly, I'm concerned that our content posts are going to be lost in a trashpile of these.

I'd have to argue no one on steemit is getting paid in dollars. You're getting upvoted and then have a chance to earn steem "tokens". But I liked your write up, it is better to be on the safe side...

Yes, much better to be on the safe side. Great argument tho about tokens, as that applies to the IRS as well. It's not taxable until you trade it for dollars, same as I can come mow your grass for comic books, or an ounce of silver.

If the argument about it being SD applies, than it would equally apply to plagiarism. We care about one type, not the other.

If they recognize SD as a currency then they'll have to recognize Bitcoin as a currency. And the central banker crooks don't want to touch that with a 10 mile pole...

A lot people have come here from Twitter. Maybe they're having problems making the transition to a more CREATIVE MEDIUM!

Big names get lots of upvotes on their video posts, but their usually their own original creations. Otherwise, I have to agree with you: It it's not your own work, add some commentary that is, whether it's critical or merely informative.

I am all for extra, extra, extra efforts and safeguards to stop plagiarism on the Steemit platform - and especially (separately) I am for NOT letting the feeds be filled with 2500 or so re-packaged versions of the same news headlines and stories that are really just cut and paste junk (like the clickbait news sites that fill FB with re-copied articles).
The intelligence level of this community deserves to see original material promoted almost exclusively, I feel. People can "share" videos and news stories all they like with no reward (for all I care), but with the overall profit motivations of posting on Steemit involved, this will get so out of hand real quickly if not nipped in the bud, it could make the site and many feeds irrelevant. Post videos yes, but I'd vote that if re-posting material here that is already on YouTube, Vimeo, etc, it should almost exclusively be allowed to only promote material that the "poster" (account holder) has the copyright to or some very legitimate claim to originality.
To avoid copyright infringement in general - from what I know anyways - detailed commentary avoids those lawsuits under "critical review" law - esp when disagreeing with the quoted material - but limits the use of copyrighted material to only posting primarily excerpts of the copyrighted material, not the whole thing. (And esp not over and over and over again in my news feed, is my plea here!)
Sorry for the essay, but see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fair_use
and notice the very first sentence has the word "limited". Fair use does not allow 100% reproduction of someone else's work, and is even stricter when a motivation to profit is evident. I feel this HAS to be Steemit's stance/guideline/enforced rule.
"Fair use is a US legal doctrine that permits limited use of copyrighted material without acquiring permission from the rights holders. "

Thank you so much for your insight

You are quite kind, thank you. But I realized (too late) with these feelings I probably need to go write me own article now, haha
