people definitely don't react well to "spam" comments like that and follow/resteem/upvote begs.
I think it really comes down to a few basics:
create good content, steadily.
find your niche ;)
Comment genuinely on things you find interesting and only if you feel like you have something more to say than "awesome post bro".
genuinely try to connect with people - make friends.
And then the following builds naturally I think. :D
