Important Security Question: Website Promoted in FB Steemit Group Requires Steem Account Info. How to Check if a Site is Legit?

in #steemit8 years ago

This might be a bit silly, so I apologize in advance if that is the case.

I have been following a few groups about Steemit in facebook.
(I am extremely disappointed by what the facebook users are asking and talking about in other social media channels, but this is another topic)

A few minutes ago, I saw that a facebook user was inviting other users to sign in his "beta" website which operates on steemit blockchain. When you try to log in, it requests steem username + private posting key. Other websites I have seen (like dmania, busy.org etc) go through steemconnect for the log in.

This is the post that the user invites other users (Group has more than 12000 members!)

This is the website that requires for our steem acount info in order to sign in

Could you please advise how we can check validity of such websites? How can we protect ourselves and what should we advise others? What should we pay attention to?

Any help, guidance, reference to information would be extremely valuable!

Thank You!

Red Flag No1 it's steefun, not steemfun .
Red Flag No2 wants private posting key.
I would let other people be the testers...
Personal opinion here.

When a website/platform that is built on the steem blockchain is asking for your steemit private key in order to use it, then it's probably a scam.

Before steemconnect, the only way was to ask for the private posting key. So the only way to have an idea if they are scam or not is to look at the source code of the page. Also they most likely would have advertise on Steemit.com if they were legit.

Thank you so much for commenting.
I saw no advertisement on steemit - and to check the sourcecode I guess it is out of the questions for most users :)
So better stay safe now, than cry later!

You talk about very nice things. Actually, many people ask to make an account by showing greed for upvotes. Many of them have account but their user ID has percieve protection and questions about me. I think those ID should be stopped by the webswads and their websites should be closed.
