"Statistics are the most important auxiliary science in the new society, they provide the measure for all social activity."
translated from August Bebel
Statistics can provide us with interesting information. It allows us to make comparisons and draw conclusions from the data collected.
I have already analyzed the origin of spam and abuse and found out that Asia is clearly ahead of the other continents. At the time, I also used the data to investigate whether the more poverty, the more abuse is true.
This time I don't want to analyze data from a data set, but present and analyze statistics about steemit.com and the ecosystem on the outside.
Here I will rely on the statistics of SimilarWeb.
General statistics about steemit.com
In March, the site had 39.36 million hits from 16.85 million unique visitors. Calls are distributed almost equally between desktop (48.5%) and mobile devices (51.5%).
The Bounce Rate - How attractive is Steemit?
The bounce rate is the proportion of visitors to a website that only generate a single page impression.
Ryte Wiki
To find out how attractive Steemit is to visitors, it makes sense to look at the bounce rate. Because it seems logical that who leaves the site directly again, also has no interest.
That's why I compared Steemit with medium and blogger.
blogger.com is a platform from Google to create a blog.
medium.com is also a platform to create your own blog.

Relatively fast it becomes visible that Steemit has the highest bounce rate. This means that at Steemit more than half and more than on comparable platforms leave Steemit immediately after the first page view.
There may be several reasons for this, but we can only speculate.
One possibility would be the fact that many of the people land on the start page and see trending, which is hardly interesting for them.
Origin of users on Steemit
Whatever is interesting, is the origin of the users. This part of the statistics becomes important whenever you think about your target group, who do I want to reach and how do I do it (-> language).

Indien |
Großbritannien |
Deutschland |
Venezuela |
20.37 % |
5.99 % |
4.36 % |
3.83 % |
3.76 % |
The USA is well ahead of the other countries.
However, it is interesting to note that Venezuela ranks fifth with just over 30 million inhabitants. The share of traffic from India and Venezuela has also increased by around 13% each, while the other three countries have lost up to 22%.
One possible explanation would be that Steemit is spreading more widely, especially in poor countries, where people in Steemit see the potential for better financing.
At this point I would like to point out again my
analysis of the origin of spam, because if we combine the results, we can assume that spam and abuse can increase significantly in the future.

DTube and DLive compared to YouTube and Twitch
Some have come to Steemit to switch to DTube with the basic idea of YouTube. The DTube is not the best alternative, some people seem to have noticed, especially in German-speaking countries, because the share of traffic from Germany has dropped by 31.63%, so that the share of Germany is only 15.78%. Here one can conclude on a change to DLive, which is taking place right now, because with DLive the share of traffic from Germany has increased by 26.37%.
The German share for YouTube has also increased by 10.93%, but a correlation would be too far-fetched here.
The bounce rate in comparison
I would also like to take a closer look at the bounce rate on these platforms, because it seems to be quite revealing here.
Since DLive is also a streaming platform, I now also add Twitch to be able to make statements about DLive.
DTube |
DLive |
YouTube |
Twitch |
37.60 % |
40.31 % |
27.08 % |
33.93 % |
A comparison of the figures quickly reveals a difference. DTube and DLive are both in the 40% range, while YouTube and Twitch are in the 30% range.
The two conventional platforms seem to be more attractive than the two variants on the STEEM Blockchain.
I would attribute the responsibility for the content of the videos here, because due to the small selection on DTube and DLive, the videos and streams do not appeal to everyone anymore.
On YouTube, for example, viewers also receive suggestions for videos that might be of interest to them, based on the data collected from Google about this user.
Twitch also offers a much wider selection of streamed games than DLive, so you won't always find what you're looking for.
It is exciting to see that platforms with streaming in this example have a higher bounce rate than platforms that are only used for videos.
Traffic from other social media
The origin of these is always decisive for the audience. For DTube and DLive, the share of traffic through social media is close to 20% each. So it seems clear that the origin from there also has some informative value about the audience group.

These data are also subdivided between DTube and DLive, as well as YouTube and Twitch.
On DTube and DLive, a large part of the social media traffic comes through YouTube. So it seems as if there is active wandering from one platform to the next.
Twitch receives significantly fewer views from YouTube. The 29.26% can probably also be explained by the fact that many YouTuber also stream on Twitch. When these YouTuber then announce their streams on YouTube, there is always a traffic to Twitch.
YouTube seems to compensate these calls, which the other platforms receive from YouTube, with a significantly higher share of traffic from Facebook.
The biggest difference between the conventional platforms and DTube and DLive are the shares of Reddit traffic. YouTube and Twitch are clearly superior, with double-digit percentages, whereas DLive doesn't even have 1%.
There seems to be some catching up to do here if you want to convince the audience of your service.

Steemit must become more attractive!
As already mentioned above, the bounce rate in the Steemit ecosystem is always higher than on comparable platforms.
With the current trending page Steemit doesn't look very attractive to newcomers, they probably also miss suitable content on DTube and DLive for them.
What is needed is a more balanced presentation that offers as much interesting content as possible. It is clear that the trending pages depend almost only on the bots, but we can also contribute to making Steemit more attractive with our voting behaviour.
this post was really helpful
Nice post, important info to consider! Steemit is the Future already in!
Facebook has bots too but they are not called bots and they are invisible. Steemit may have a learning curve like Bitcoin and Ubuntu but it is catching on and if http://Steemit.com is tough, then people can try http://Busy.org for example.
