Ideas on expanding Steemit presence in India

in #steemit6 years ago

I recently joined Steemit chiefly due to my interest in decentralised social media, blockchain and cryptocurrency. I see a lot of potential in Steemit even though I am not fan of private blockchains. In concept and development, Steemit seems success though a lot of improvements will be needed as more people come onboard.

As lot of people are still new to social media in developing countries, there is a lot of space for growth. India has the largest young population and more and more of them are introduced to the internet everyday. If Steemit gets introduced to them early, Steemit can effectively compete with other established social media giants like Facebook and Twitter.

Ideas:

  • First thing is language. See Diversity of Languages in India by @aarkay for some overview on languages in India. India is very language diverse country and more and more people are using internet in native languages other than English in India. If Steemit becomes available in native languages, it can effectively beat Facebook which is not too much focused on availability in local languages.

  • Majority of Indians access internet on mobiles. Availability of full-scale Steemit on mobile is crucial for expansion in India.

  • Steemit can be advertised as a social media where people can earn. Indians are very much interested in anything which help them make money. (I think some simplified system of distribution of money would be very helpful. Current system is hard to understand and estimate. Steem power and Steem Dollars etc confuses an average person. And of course, the availability of that money in local currency, Rupees is crucial. Lookout for legal hurdles.)

  • Continue the development of Steemit with focus on variety of content, not just as a blogging platform. D-tube is good introduction. Add variety of content with easy accessibility to people. Steemit still feels like for nerds. It should be child's play to master. Be careful not to clutter it too much as Facebook had done.

  • Bring some newspapers (especially of local language) and content writers onboard. Their content will bring in more people onborad with engagement of users going higher.

  • Bring some celebrities onboard. Bring some ome popular Youtubers, bloggers, technology reviewers, film reviers and other online content writers here. It will be beneficial to them as well as Steemit.

  • Something like Communities of bygone Orkut is needed (Facebook Groups are terrible). Communities with common interests and goals will thrive here because there is a lack of any open popular platform for it. Orkut was social media giant in India once. They are already looking forward to come back as the Hello Network with focus on communities.

  • Most important: Introduce Steemit to premium institutes like IITs, IIMs and others. These institutes are infested with nerds and people with wide range of topic interests. Once Steemit becomes popular among them, other colleges and institutes will follow due to mouth-to-mouth-publicity. Their quality content will also push popularity. This was happened with Quora. And Quora built sizeable Indian community (~20% of Quora users). See here for some Q&A about it on Quora.

  • We need more and more meetups like this in Manglore and in Jaipur by @firepower and others.

And bring in more ideas..
