I think buying upvotes from bots is a bad idea, for a few reasons. Mostly, I think vote bots have become too popular to be profitable. You will receive a vote worth less than the bid you paid most of the time.
The first time I used a vote bot it was to buy a vote for another user. I thought that buying a vote through a bot would end up giving that user more than if I just sent him the SBD. That was not the case at all, even before considering the drop in fiat value across the board with crypto lately.
What if I need them to make blogging worth my time?
In that case^, your job is not blogging, it's arbitrage.
Your advice is good. Build an audience to get upvotes.
