where there is demand there will be supply. It is a pity really because steemit promotion tab was for promoting post, but instead of lining the pockets of a few, everyone would win because as far as I am aware, and please do correct me if I am wrong, but steem or sbd sent to promotion would be burnt.

Yes, SBD sent to promotion would get burnt. At one time there was an extreme shortage of SBD which drove the price through the roof. Burning it back then wouldn't help. Now there is an abundance of SBD. Burning it now will be helpful.
