HOLDING MY FIRST STEEMIT AWARENESS SEMINAR IN IKORODU, NIGERIA

in #steemit6 years ago

This is my first post on a concept I believe would contribute to developing and making steemit a better platform.
Have you ever wondered why despite the increasing amount of introduction posts being submitted to the introduceyourself tag, yet you'll notice that majority of the posts you find here on steemit are by familiar and regular users. And I got to researching about why this was so, and this led me to a post made by @arcange , which can be found here.

I got to discover that according to the charts displayed by @arcange, close to 50% of all registered users on steemit were inactive, meaning that they probably tried steeming for sometime, and then quit because they were not getting the returns they expected from steemit.

And this led me to creating steemcollege. Steemcollege is a school, where we would be having a Two-day program for steemit newbies, aimed at reducing the number of steemit drop-outs and inactive accounts. This two day program will consist of a one-day awareness on what steemit is( here, we get the participants registered), and another one-day tutoring (after their accounts have been activated by the steemit team) on all the ethics of posting and commenting on steemit, and about other parts of the steemit platform. We intend that every two days, we will be introducing to steemit and training new sets of steemians.

While searching for materials for steemcollege, I discovered a wonderful book that simplifies the right way to steem on steemit. This text book is Steemit 101 by @donkeypong, @cryptoctopus, @stellabelle, and @steemship. It would be our main textbook for steemcollege.
In addition to the book steemit101, I would also be sharing from the little experience I have gained during my stay here on steemit.

Finally, we would then create a whatsapp group for each group we speak to, so that we can continue to follow them up as they embark on their steemit journey, taking care of them and "babysitting" them as they take their first baby steemit steps, and grow to be able to stand on their own and help other newbies grow.

For now, due to financial constraints, we decided to rent places on hourly basis to have our lectures, and we hope that as we grow, we can then improve to monthly rents, and then to having a place of our own - A standard steemcollege with computers and internet service (
I just hope am not dreaming too big).

AT THE IKORODU BUS PARK

I decided to open the first steemcollege in Lagos state Nigeria, which is about 9 hours drive by bus from where i live in Abuja, Nigeria. Having left Abuja for Lagos at around 8am GMT, I arrived Lagos around 4:30 GMT. The image above is the ARUNA bustop in Ikorodu Lagos state Nigeria, which is the last bustop close to the hotel I will be heading to.
What amazes me about this bustop is the material with which the blue roofing is made with. It is made in such a way that even when the sun is extremely hot, as long as you are under the covering of this blue roof, you would not feel the heat at all, I mean at all. It seems this covering is made with a highly reflective ''solar reflector''. See more pictures of this lovely design.

GOING TO MY HOTEL ROOM

From there I headed to the hotel, named Normal hotel , which I think is a wierd name for a hotel. On getting to the hotel, I found the customer service to be far from normal, they were really nice and professional. I sure did enjoy my stay there. I recommend them for anyone that would be visiting Ikorodu and would need to sleep over. Here a some pictures of me getting to the hotel.

THE D-DAY

The next day was the day the steemit awareness seminar was to be carried out. We got a good turnup for the program, and the feed back was phenomenal.
This awareness seminar is the first day of a two-day steemcollege program, where we introduce people to steemit, and help them sign up. When their accounts have been activated, we would then have to come back to carryout the second phase, which is a one-day practical lecture on blogging on steemit which will include ethics of steeming, how to comment appropraitely, and many more topics.
So I can call this first phase the introduction to steemit, not ''textbook'' kind of introduction, but really introducing people to the steemit platform.

In other to save cost, we had to look for a location that was affordable and comfortable. The awareness program was a huge success, and we were able to get close to 20 people to signup on steemit on that day, although they had issues with receiving their confirmation email, which we found out to be a general issue everywhere in the world based on a post we read about another steemian making the same complaint. Here are some photos from the awareness program.

QUESTION AND ANSWER SECTION

After the teaching section, we then had a question and answer section where some of the participants asked very reasonble question, and we got them answered. Here are some photos of the question and answer section.

Now that we have gotten the participants to understand the concept of steemit and also helped them to sign up for steemit accounts, we then have to wait for their accounts to be opened, then we can carryout the second phase of their steemcollege training.

Some people might ask why we have to wait for them to have accounts before we carryout their main training. The reason we made this decision is that we did not want the training to be the usual college pattern of training where it is all theory, we needed them to have a practical experience and practice of what they are being taught. We needed them to practice the right way to comment, the right way to post, and so on.

Also, we planned on conducting a live contest, where the participants that win will be given 10SBD as their reward. The aim of this contest is to use the price money as a means of motivating the participants to learn the right way to steem.

Finally, let us not forget the aim of steemcollege, which is to bring people to know about steemit, so that they can join, and contribute their wonderful ideas, for the continuous development of this platform, and also to teach them the ethics of steemit, so as to keep them encouraged as they take their first baby steps here on steemit.

You can call us the babysitters of steemit. Thanks for reading.

Oh wow that's awesome! Thanks for introducing so many ppl to Steem. Nigeria seems like a world away from where I live.

oh i see, thanks for your comment, well appreciated

Same thing i wanted to say...

😊 thanks for your comment

Probably in the future we would be able to get to your country 😊😊

The fact is, the whales are the ones killing this platform.
Imagine only 50% registered users are active, they sale their votes on a daily basis, no encouragement for the newbies like us.
I know we have to be consistent with our posting, commenting etc but it is not easy. After spending about 3-5 hours to write a post you end up getting no recognition even if your post is better than those who buys the whales votes.
The newbies are future leaders of this great platform, lets encourage them , put them on the right path and you will see how they will so so excel and take this platform to a lime light...

Thanks at all.
@orisfina

Like you said, It's really not easy for newbies here, and that's true, that's why they need guidance, which is why steemcollege was created. We guide newbies on the right way to post and comment, in order for them to earn profits here on steemit. We know they have what it takes to take this platform to the next level, that's why we have decided to invest in them through this free college. Thanks for your comment
