People Really Should Use Tags Correctly

in #steemit9 years ago (edited)

Browsing Steemit and looking for interesting content is hard as it is with the current UI, and it's made even harder by the fact that people keep abusing the tags.

People tag posts with "steem", for example, that have nothing to do with the STEEM blockchain, the price, or anything like that. They just use the "steem" tag for more views.

So, whenever I browse through the tag, I run into noise, get annoyed, and stop browsing.

This happens with other tags, as well.

It's really frustrating running into your shitty posts about your ugly cat when I'm looking for stuff on the STEEM price.

People, learn how to use the tags system, don't put your stuff under a certain tag just for views, if the content has nothing to do with that tag.

And I also think this should be moderated more by the community. Flagging a post because of tag abuse is completely justified, in my opinion.

Sort:

The biggest abuse is in the introduceyourself tag because a lot of bots upvote there so people poste with that tag to get a smal free boost even tho that content has nothing to do with the tag, and the bad thing is that new members have it much harder getting noticed in the sea of random posts!

Tell me about it I only made 47 cents last month.

Interesting, I wasn't aware of this. Thanks.

I'm a member for just only 24 hours and I find it also hard to browse and find content. I think the problem is not only in the tags but also in the steemit GUI. for example I hate it that if you click a post it will open in a lightbox overlay. I'm using a laptop with mouse pad and I always accidently click on the background so that the article closes 😬

Yeah, it's the way of Steemit for now. There are some upside and downside of everything, same is the case with Tags. People misuse tags for getting abuse and I don't blame them. Because Steemit power rests mainly in WHALES and DOLPHINS. If people want to get exposure for their content, then they would obviously would do anything to get it. It's completely upon us whether to flag them or not. If I were you, I would not flag them. I know the struggle on steemit and I know the hard work I am still doing to get some exposure. People who misuse tags are wrong for sure, but who are we to judge.
Once in our steemit life, we have all done some awful things.
So, just give them something to begin their journey, motivate them instead by making a good support profile for minnows or directly upvote the article they upload is the best way to help these people.
Thanks again @schattenjaeger for showing some light into this matter.

Thank you cryptonet. I appreciate the comments. I've never had a blog before and on the learning curve. I appreciated the article, so that it makes me slow down to make sure tagging correctly. Thank you again for your great comments and understanding. Have a great day!

It's alright mate. I said what is right and what should be followed by all steemians. Thanks for the appreciation though @in-n-out

Someone finally standing up for the little guy!

what i want to know is why the tags stay the same all the time. surely it would be a good idea to change them depending on what people are talking about on here.

Not sure how to tag.

Yeah. It's just like twitter when they want to get more views they put $btc, $eth to talk about some other shitcoin that has nothing to do with it.

Hear, hear.

Did you write this so you could use the tag "steemit" in a legit way? Just checking 8-).

Of course!

(No, this legitimately annoys me a lot.)

I know.

BTW great post! Follow me back?

And who's to blame, lol ?

Once you're done with that, make sure you tag the post steemit since otherwise no one will ever read it. This is really important: only posts under the steemit tag get read! So make sure you add that in.

Oh, no. Have I created a monster.

There! Now repent! : )

Thank you very much for all your advice. Very useful for beginners like me.

I think it can be difficult for newbies to know what tags are/aren't appropriate when they first get here, so tend to go with the popular ones hoping it will get them more views. I know I've been guilty of this myself in the past. That said, I know better now so I don't do it and I agree with you that's really annoying.

Honestly, it really should be common sense.

Using tags that have nothing to do with an article to get views is dumb.
You guys get enough views tagging articles as intended.

Greed is a virus that has eaten deep into human, then again some newbies don't know their ways aroind tag hencw the abuse.

Some cheese for your whine.

I actually agreed on your opinion. And i also thinks that people look at trending tags and use them. I try to use the tags that i think appropriate to my post. Im not scared to create a new one :) . I hope we start broaden the tags! Good review btw

If you can stand the hypocrisy, get them back and tag this post in "awww" and "cats"

It might help to remove the ability to sort tags by payouts. I don't really want to lose the info, but I'm pretty sure people are packing into the tags at the top as you noted, like Steem.

I couldn't agree more. I don't flag people but I do think that tag abuse is a flaggable offense. That being said, sometimes it's accidental, sometimes people use a tag because they don't know what tag they should use.

I never know how to tag my posts, I usually use one of the popular tags that fits with the content and then make up the rest by either using words from the title or whatever, but maybe that's why my posts haven't been getting much attention lately, maybe I should start tag spamming, haha.

Great information. Unfortunately, people will always try to find ways to abuse situation. It's hard because some people can be making genuine mistakes and not know it but they hard to tell apart. But I do appreciate your great information. Thank you.

My friend, I totally agree with you. We must give the indicated use to the labels, it will be more beneficial for all.

Tell it to steemcleaners?

You are right dear, it is the main issue why so much quality posts go undervalued here. even under the photography tag people post anything. Today I uploaded my photo shoot of Royal Enfield bike but it is still undervalued. Have a look at it and tell me what do you think about it?

You should check out @goodbot created by @felixxx trying to moderate the introducemyself tag. (There is one who has used this tag over 200 times)

Good post in here, thanks for this important info, this will help
