I'll start by saying that this is just what I do personally. How you vote is entirely up to you.
I've been on Steemit for well over a year. It's changed a lot in that time. There was a different voting algorithm back then so that minnow votes really counted for nothing. I can remember a time when having 1000SP might make your vote worth a cent and I think it got worse. Now your vote is proportionate to your SP and the high Steem price means that votes are more valuable than ever.
When you first join you will only be able to give a full vote. You need several hundred SP before you get this slider. That becomes necessary as the value of your vote rises to adjust how much you give and it also allows you to vote on more posts and comments without using up your voting power.

You won't normally see the dollar amount. That's provided by the Steemit More Info extension.
I use Steem Voter to support some friends and charity accounts. I just don't want to miss voting on what they do.

I've also used Streemian that allows you to follow the votes of others. I'm going to turn that off for now as I plan to make more of my voting manual.

So the rest of my voting has been manual. I mostly look at the posts in my feed. Those include the people I follow, but also any they have re-steemed. I'm looking for posts that I think add value to Steemit. That means they can be entertaining, informative or just interesting. It's a very personal thing and your criteria will be different. I vary the slider value according to my own criteria too. I'll generally give a larger vote where more work went into the post, e.g. if some art or music. My vote is worth several dollars, but I want to help as many people as possible.
I also vote on comments. Good comments on my own posts are very likely to get something. Even 1% from me is a few cents. Any comment that shows no indication of having read the post gets nothing. If it really looks like spam then it may earn a small flag. I just tend to use enough to move it to the bottom and possibly hide it. You can report persistent spammers to @steemcleaners if you don't have enough SP to flag much. That can even earn you a reward. Nobody wants spam here, so do your part.
If I see someone else's post that has a mix of good and bad comments with no votes then I may give some small votes to move the good ones up.
I also delegate SP to others. That reduces my vote, but I can't use all my voting power and so let others do it on my behalf.
You may have noticed that I haven't mentioned curation rewards. That's because I'm not that bothered about it. What I make from curation is a small part of my earnings and I leave it to chance. I'd rather support others who need it. I may look at the trending page, but they tend to not need my votes and by then it's likely to be too late to make anything much from curation anyway. You need some serious SP for that to be a real income.
If you are looking to earn something here then write good posts and comments that engage with the post. That will serve you much better than a thousand 'follow me' comments that may get flagged. Saying you voted on a post in a comment is not likely to do much for you if your vote is not worth much, but a good comment may earn you a few cents. We are all busy people and don't like having our time wasted.
I and others are looking to encourage behaviour that enhances Steemit. We want this platform to succeed and are doing what we can to encourage new users who enhance it. If you put in a similar effort you will build connections and a following that will serve you well. There is money to be made here, but you have to earn it.
Any questions?
Steem on!

I'll buy guitar picks for Steem Dollars
If this post is over seven days old you can vote up one of my newer posts to reward me.
Spam comments may be flagged
Also, don't forget the power of resteeming someone else's post, it gets the post seen by potentially more eyes :) That's why I do the 'Resteem Sunday' for new Photographer's. I tend to resteem things I like and that haven't earned hardly anything. There's not an exact science to it, it is just what catches my eye :)
I have a similar approach: even if I don't use steemvoter, streemian or similar and I upvote just manually (because of this I'm missing some good posts from friends and charity accounts, I have to think about the opportunity to use steemvoter or similar ^^). I usually watch in my feed and what the people I follow resteem, so I upvote the posts I think add a "value" , even if a different value in different fields. Sometimes I like to "discover" new interesting posts watching on "new" from people that I don't follow, but it's very difficult because there is more trash between the posts. :( I also upvote the replies on my post that I think add a value (about the theme of the post or simply because the author wrote something that make me think he/she read the post, just like an encouragement). To upvote comments I use a lower percentage than I use to upvote a post (just few time I upvoted using an high percentage a comment, but just because the author wrote an interesting, informative comment like a post ^^) .
I do look at the New page sometimes, but there's just not enough time.
new Steemians can also join Busy.org and they can also utilize the voting slider even if they don't have the slider on Steemit !
This is a good tip for new users! By voting on Busy they don't have to drain all their voting power within a few minutes ;)
More people should be doing this. I see so many people who speculate in getting the best returns from curation rewards, and that is horrible for the long-term health of the blockchain (in my opinion). It will simply end up with the popular authors making huge amounts of money, while everyone else makes very little. If we all voted like you do @steevc, Steemit would be a much better place. This is also the reason why I have stopped using a curation guild, but rather only vote manually on good content (and a few authors who I am a big fan of, and therefore autovote on).
Exactly. We need to spread the rewards around. It's boring to see the same old people on the trending page. I rarely even read those posts
I'm with you there! I feel like I see the same authors there every single day, and if I only wanted their content I would follow them. I hope we are able to come together as a community and make the Trending page a bit more varied at one point.
Words of wisdom! It's good to see there are people who use their votes in a reliable and honest way, especially with all those curation rewards and downvotes scandals, etc. The community needs it.
I'm comparatively small fry, but I do what I can. I see some abuse of voting power, but there's not much I can do about that. I just try to ensure good people get something. Just not enough hours in the day.
Well, you are at level 70! Which for me is as big as it gets! I have been stuck at 69 for the past 6 months at least :( Anyway, good job, keep it up! Oh, and if you don't mind, would you care following my friend @bacinilat ? She is the first friend I managed to convince to join Steemit and she will have awesome stuff to show soon enough :) You won't regret it!
I was happy to get to 70, but it was a long slog. It may be a long time before I get any higher. I'm having to limit how many I follow to keep things manageable.
Small fry my bottom! You're a very influential fish in an exciting and intelligent shoal.
First of all, thanks for being on the site, and for sharing your advice. I've been on here for a little over a month, and i really do love it. I haven't posted nearly enough, due to exams, but i am looking forward to getting more into it. I would really love to do what you're doing. Way too many posts goes completely unnoticed, and theres a huge gap between the time spent writing/ payout of the different users. Some spent minutes writing a several hundred dollar post, while others spent hours writing a post that isn't seen by anyone. I would like to reward the latter, and seek out the hidden quality content. For that i need my steem power to grow though, but that i am working on. Currently only sitting at 262 steem power, but i am slowly getting there. Looking forward to 500 where i will get the slider. Anyway, if the price of steem continues like this, it wiill be hard to gain a much higher steem power. Like everything else, i should probably have joined earlier ^^
I hope you had a great new years eve btw :)
Your SP is already worth a nice amount, but keep on building it to increase you vote. Good luck.
I didn't do much for new year, but that's okay.
Can i ask, how do you feel about the latest price surge in steem? It kinda scares me that it has gone up SO fast. Also, i would like to buy more steem for steempower of course :) But i would rather have seen a steady growth in 2018, which would maybe end up at the current price, but stuff like this is hard to dictate :)
I'm looking forward to writing about my bachelor, new tech, and making cooking videos in the new year.
Cheers man
It scares me a little too. Suddenly a lot of people got rich, but it may not last long. A steady growth based on real developments is healthier.
healthier yes, but this little episode is very encouraging for those of us bashing away earning pennies on our posts. Those pennies can actually add up to some decent cash now.
And to take a different perspective - maybe it is based on real developments - that being that Steemit is no longer under-the-radar and a lot of investors are seeing that this is a really good investment and are keen to climb on board, knowing that growth is almost guaranteed.
I am surprised that it has lasted so long though. And now that STEEM is following suit, it may be that our wildest dreams were not wild enough.
I think this will be a standout year for Steemit, STEEM and cryptos in general. Buckle up, it's going to be a wild ride ;-)
So, here are the things that i learned from this post:-
HERE ARE SOME OF MY QUESTIONS:
A lot of the answers you seek can be found in the FAQ. Your voting power is like a bucket of water under a dripping tap. If you empty it with voting it takes time to re-fill.
No, your steem isn't consumed by voting and you regenerate 20% voting power a day and since one 100% vote cost 2% voting power, you have 10 100% votes a day. IF you want to check your voting power use https://steemd.com/@themobilewriter
@jeanpi1908
Thanks for the link. Would be helpful for me.
Hi Steve, I've been a Steemian for a week and I'm proud of that. I try to make interesting blogs about everything that has to do with sustainability. It is nice if this is appreciated and people give reactions. I think you have to invest a lot of time and energy to make it a success, but that is not bad. You get a lot in return. Thank you for your explanation and advice.
It's worth the investment of time. Good luck
i never used autovoting services and i don't intend too but i get why some people use them and it's as you mentioned to vote for some of their friends, charity accounts and in general people (that worth for them at least) given the fact that time is limited.
I only vote manually and i had made a pact with myself to read everything i upvote or at least 70% of it. i know it may take sometime but i follow the logic of ''do what you want others to do to you'' Also another key i think is commenting on people and show them that you read their posts ( but now i get out of the point)
Uhhh 4% 0.16 ehehehe someone is powerful. Eheheheh yeah that is great i am doing the same. I have been saving and delegated already some steem power to some people and will keep doing it. To help people to get motivated and also be able to grow as members of the community.
Great approach my friend... As I am a minnow and have only SP 19.. So, my vote value is not much and I can use only about 11 votes daily... That's why I cannot have a constant approach.. I keep on digging through my favorite users (you are one of them)... and then I vote what seems to me is great content for steemit.... My vote doesn't have value or add value to the content creator but still its a vote and many of the steemians really appreciate every single upvote...God Bless You!
Your vote may have no value, but your opinion does. Keep engaging with people and you will do well
Thank you so much... And your thoughts are really great...
i appreciate you for this(I also vote on comments. Good comments on my own posts are very likely to get something).and tell me how can we increase my sp?
You can increase your sp by powering up your steem.
This sort of post really helps out the nubies who really appreciate it I'm sure.
I hope so. I see a lot of people doing counter-productive stuff here. Just trying to help
That is all we have.
I see this as the future of the internet, no question.
I always find it interesting how other people use steemit.com. When I first started on here about 7 months ago I was only interested in writing articles. Only later did I start voting on articles and leaving comments. It is an essential part of this community and I can't emphasize its importance enough to new people that are on here.
I am in the same position as you; I just don't have enough time to research and write articles AND read hundreds of posts. Of course, we all have our own interests and those are the posts I try to seek out and upvote.
The other thing is that I realize for some people on here getting an upvote could mean the difference of eating or paying the rent. After all, we are a community and helping others should play a part of being in this community.
Thanks for the thought provoking article.
...upvoted followed and resteemed
I've turned off the Streemian voting totally now. I realised it was voting for posts I wouldn't vote on. They get enough rewards without me. It's through commenting that I have built my following. It pays off
Agreed. It is part of the community that a lot of people overlook. Community does mean community and it is hard to build a community if we don't talk to one another!
Cheers!
Really interesting post! I'm just voting manually, since I want to read before upvoting, but if I find really interesting bloggers I could also decide to use an automatic tool.
At the moment, I can't choose the upvoting percentage, so I can upvote few posts per day. Hope to reach enough SPs to control it. Even if I'm still earning few cents per day with my Blockchain and Cryptocurrency course, so it seems a long way.
And you have no idea how grateful I am for your continuing delegation support, without which I doubt my account would be pushing just a smidge under $3K as we speak.
The delegated amount is not included in your value. It just affects the value of your votes. You seem to be voting a lot. Have you automated it? Your voting power is down. BTW Congrats on 1000 followers!
Some of it is automated, I'm trying to spread the love pretty actively tbh.
that more info add on is cool. Thanks!

Thanks for sharing! I'm actually just voting manually on posts and comments as I wasn't sure if the other kind (bots, etc) were legal, but I'm assuming since you're using it, that it doesn't violate any Steem rules. I've been using Instagram for many years, and there you'll get banned if you use any kind of bots to upvote on stuff.
There are not really any rules, just community preferences. You can't be banned as nobody has that control. You may be judged on your actions by others. It's their choice if they decide it's wrong and then they could flag you.
Ah okay, that's good to know then! I might consider doing something then ;-)
Ah I didn't know that Chrome extention existed! Just downloaded it, thanks
I recommend you to go trought the post featured in the @ocd compilation since they are mainly from high quality and deserve a bit more value. That make it also easier to find good post.
It's a matter of available time. I may have to follow less people as I just don't have enough time and there are certain topics I want to follow.
That is why ocd is helpful, it makes it quicker to find quality content, by just checking the compilation.
cool
i see your plan sir
not everytime whales vote massive for whales
i have asked myself that question severally until when i noticed that the rich only help the rich cause they want to invest in people that understands whats the meaning of risk but i still dont like there view,
meanwhile i have my own little minnow project coming up i dont know if you could helps. (art minnows)
and your conclusion was superb
i think i have to seal it..(lols)
Good information about some basics about steemit for new user and i am happy to see that you are giving vote to comments on your post and also reading all comments it is very good thing .this act will encourage people to comment on your post .specially for new user because they have not a lot of power so that is why their comments always stay below.
Having the slider seems like it makes your whole life so much easier! My vote is finally worth a penny or so and I want to vote on so many things and comments but my votes won't mean much if I deplete my voting power right away!
I am planning to use that slider as well soon. Steem is becoming more and more expensive so I definitely should start that way. Thanks for the idea!
Much obliged for the thought...
Upovted and resteemed
Generic comments have no value
Helpful post....
