Obviously. It's not INSTEAD of, but in addition. Sure, the idea is to grow the platform and steem userbase. What better way to advertise the platform and bring users than to make the AUTHORS promote their posts knowing that ANYONE can contribute to their rewards? A percentage will surely choose to join the platform, but those that won't? Can still increase the value of steem and reward authors. It's a win win situation, the way I see it.

I see, from perspective of newcomers not versed in ways of cryptocurrency could be noice if they could easily donate, they can't do that now based on current steemit functionality. Ok, we would then need to have some heavy hitting bloggers capable of attracting massive audience to pump the price for real. Small donators would also be nice (for certain bloggers only). Cool little feature, might be interesting to explore it more.
