I follow the rule, If it looks fake, then it probably is. Fake profile pics have a certain look. They look doctored or staged whereas real photos don't. Even a staged family portrait where the members have fake smiles look like real photos. But there are avatar images where the person just looks too "perfect," and if they're perfect, it's probably a computer-generated image and fake. I see it on LinkedIn all the time.
