ENGLISH LANGUAGE CONFUSING WORDS SERIES: AN INDEX TO THE SERIES

in #steemiteducation7 years ago (edited)

I would like to share what I have done so far with English confusing words that I have started months ago. This post will serve as an index to the series of posts I have already published here in Steemit. I hope this will help in promoting the #steemiteducation category and providing English language literacy to the readers.

INDEX

ADEPT VS. ADAPT VS. ADOPT

IN A SENTENCE:

Some people are just ADEPT at ADAPTing to English language that they have ADOPTed it as their second language.
ADVISE VS. ADVICE

IN A SENTENCE:

My ADVICE to the new Steemit members is to ignore the negativity that’s spreading around. I will also ADVISE you to keep posting good stuff and you will never go wrong.
AFFECT VS. EFFECT

IN A SENTENCE:

Having good writers in Steemit will AFFECT its growth and value of STEEM. However, the EFFECT of these writers leaving the blockchain social media is not a good thing for Steemit and may devalue STEEM in the long run.
BORNE VS. BORN

IN A SENTENCE:

My best friend was BORN out of marriage and grew up in a place where malaria virus is BORNE and spread by mosquitoes.
BREATHE VS. BREATH

IN A SENTENCE:

I was catching my BREATH as I hurried up the stairs so I had to BREATHE in by inhaling through my nostrils and BREATHE out by exhaling through my mouth.
COMPLIMENT VS. COMPLIMENT

IN A SENTENCE:

Upvoting an article in Steemit is a form of COMPLIMENT to the author. However, a more appreciated gesture is to COMPLEMENT the upvote with a few words or more in the comments area.
COUNSEL VS. COUNCIL

IN A SENTENCE:

The student COUNCIL agreed to hold the debate on a Sunday morning as per COUNSEL of the Principal.
ENSURE VS. INSURE

IN A SENTENCE:

With the previous incidents of Steemit accounts hacking, users can use the “SAVINGS” feature in their Wallet to INSURE their STEEM in some way. This is to ENSURE that STEEM is protected and secure.
FURTHER VS. FARTHER

IN A SENTENCE:

Before you say anything further, I must tell you a secret. The longer you hold your breath, the FARTHER you can swim underwater.
ITS VS. IT'S

IN A SENTENCE:

Steemit is a great platform and ITS strengths outweigh ITS weaknesses and IT'S where you want to be if you want to earn from your blog posts.
LOOSE VS. LOSE

IN A SENTENCE:

You are going to LOSE those fingers if you don’t let LOOSE of the knife.
STATIONARY VS. STATIONERY

IN A SENTENCE:

It’s that STATIONARY yellow cart in the office that holds all the company’s STATIONERY and letterheads.

THERE VS. THEY'RE VS. THEIR

IN A SENTENCE:

Steemit will succeed when THERE is clear understanding of how it works. The writers contribute to the community by writing and posting blogs. THEY’RE the primary assets of Steemit. THEIR contributions create and build the value of Steemit and STEEM

WHO VS. WHOM

IN A SENTENCE:

Cheetah is the bot WHO checks plagiarism in Steemit and WHOM you should not mess around when it comes to plagiarism.
WORSE VS. WORST

IN A SENTENCE:

A Plagiarist is WORSE than a thief who posts the WORST blog in all of Steemit!
YOKE VS. YOLK

IN A SENTENCE:

The YOKE that cows or buffalo carry on their neck to plow the fields is heavy and hard which is entirely opposite to the yellow YOLK of the egg that is light and soft.

It's really difficult to make the difference between those words . But what can we do ? we cannot change them
