Creative Engineering! How to make a Bridge !

in #steemiteducation5 years ago (edited)

Hello friends, it is a pleasure for me to be in this platform and above all to be able to put into practice my knowledge in a way that can help and contribute to the formation of others, I am an Engineer who has decided to venture into this world in order to to influence the education of the youngest children in a positive way and at the same time to motivate them to take an interest in Engineering.

For me the fact that a child since he is of school age is initiated in the world of Engineering could make him inclined to develop similar activities in this area in the future.

Engineering projects can motivate children to become interested in other areas such as math, science and other areas of knowledge, that is why we will develop a series of projects throughout my publications, which motivate children, at the same time that we show them that Engineering is found in practically all aspects of our daily life, in practically all designs, structures, objects, etc.

So without further ado, let's start with motivation and let our children be professionals in the future.

Today we will study a branch of Civil Engineering, which is Structural Engineering, a structural engineer is one that is responsible for the creation and design of a safe way of structures, such as bridges, buildings, houses, tunnels, walls, etc. It is very important that what is built fill all the security measures that are needed to safeguard the lives of the people who are going to make use of this.

We will put into practice the creation of two types of bridges with different types of structures, we will see how it is possible that some structures are stronger than others and therefore bear more weight than others.

We will need:

  • Two simple sheets of cardboard.

  • Several books, cds, or other objects that serve as support to create the bridge.

  • Several screws or nuts to serve as a weight.

We go with the first bridge:

For our first bridge we must place the books or CDs, as supports to create our bridge as shown in the video, then place the catulina on top and then the screws.

We can notice that when placing the screws the cardboard falls due to the weight of them.

We go with the second bridge:

In the second bridge we will place a cardboard arch between the bridge supports and on top of the other sheet of cardboard, the resistance of a structure depends on two things, one of the material with which it is made and the other of the angle or shape that is den, a flimsy material can withstand large amounts of weight as long as they are properly shaped.

After a certain amount of weight the lateral supports support compression efforts and the arc tends to be crushed.

Third bridge:

On our third bridge we will build a horizontal support by folding the cardboard in the form of a fan, as shown in the photo.

Next we will place the top sheet and place the weight, we can see that this structure is much more efficient since it supports much more weight since it receives it throughout its length and is subjected to reflection efforts (it tends to bend).

The fact that we initiate children in Engineering from an early age can affect their interest in studying this type of scientific career in the future.

Engineering exists in almost everything we see around us in our daily lives, in cars, buildings, appliances, bridges, machinery, industrial plants, etc., etc., etc. So you can go to many ways so that without your child is aware of it involved in it, nowadays has lowered the rate of professionals in this field, so it is important to include able students. to minorities, and to women, in this area.

I invite you to put into practice this kind of activities and take advantage that all children are interested in disarming, building, exploring and experimenting to involve them and awaken that spark that can turn them into an Engineer in the future.
