Genesis 37
Jacob loved his son Joseph more than he loved all his other sons. He showed this by making for Joseph a special robe with long sleeves which was very coulorful and beautiful. His brothers saw that their father loved him more than he loved them. They became jealous and started hating Joseph. But that was not the only reason why they hated him.

Joseph had two dreams. Joseph said: Listen to the dream I had. Joseph told them that he dreamt that they all were in the field tying bundles of wheat together. And that his bundle stood up but their bundles of wheat gathered around his bundle and bowed down. The dream meant that Joseph was more important than his brothers. His brothers said to him.: Do you really think you will be king over us and do you truly think you will rule over us?

He told them that he had another dream. He said: I dreamed that the sun, moon and 11 stars bowing down to me. Joseph also told his father about this dream. But his father said: What kind of dream is this? Do you really believe that your mother, your brothers and I will bow down to you?

After listening to his dreams his brothers hated him even more. They told each other. Who does he think he is to tell us that we will bow before him. But his father thought about what all these things could mean.

One day when Joseph's brothers took care of their father's sheep and were far away from their home. His father asked him to went and see how they were doing.

Joseph had to ride a very long way to get to them.

Joseph was still far from them when they saw him coming. Before he came to them, they made a plan to kill him. They told each other.: Look there came that old dreamer, now is our chance to kill him. We can tell our father that a wild animal has eaten him. Then we will see that all his dreams have meant nothing.

But Joseph's eldest brother Ruben said to them.: No, let's not kill him, but rather throw him into a pit then we will not be guilty of murder.

Ruben told them that because he was secretly planning to get Joseph out of the pit when all his other brothers have left.

Josef did not know what his brothers planned for him. When Joseph finally came to them they mock him and took his
beautiful robe with long sleeves. Then they grabbed Joseph and threw him with force in the pit.
Fortunately, the pit was empty and Joseph fell on the dry ground.

Then his brothers went to eat. They just started when they saw a dust cloud in the distance, it was a lot of Merchants and there were tree gum, balm and resin on their camels. The Merchants wanted to take the tree gum balm and resin to Egypt to sell it there.

Judas, one of the brothers said wait I have a better plan if we sell him to these people, we do not commit murder and then we still have money to buy other things. They agreed that it was a good plan and then sold Joseph for twenty pieces of silver to the Merchants. All of Judah's brothers listened to him. When the merchants passed by they pulled Joseph out of the pit, and sold him to the merchants for 20 pieces of silver. The merchants took Joseph to Egypt.

But Reuben who told them to throw him into the pit did not know that they had sold him. When Ruben returned to the well and saw that Joseph was no longer in the pit. He cried a lot and tore his clothes. He returned to his brothers and said to them, The child is no longer there. What will I tell my father?

Then his brothers slaughtered a goat and they took Joseph's long dress and rub it with blood. Then they took it to their father and told him We picked up this dress. See if that's your son Josef's dress.

Jacob then looked and said; It's my son's dress. A wild animal killed and eaten him. Jacob was very sad. He tore his clothes and put on sackcloth. He cried and wept for a long time about his son. All his sons and daughters came to comfort him, but he did not want them to comfort him. He said; I will continue to mourn for him until I die. Jacob cried a lot about Joseph.
