Returning to the right path

Life is not always fair to everyone.

As educators, we seek to have equality within our classroom but we cannot deny the brutal fact of inequality of modern society.

Below is a sharing by Azy about how he returns to the right path after going astray when he was a youth.

Going astray

Getting a divorce is really very common in this modern society. As a married couple decides that they are not right for one another, they simply get a divorce.

Children are the ones who are often the most affected. They may even feel that they are at fault for the separation of their parents.

In the sharing, Azy’s parents got divorced when he was only 10 years old. He really felt that no one cared for him.

In school, he was constantly being bullied and he started to join gang as he felt being protected and a sense of belonging.

Many youths go astray as they seek for a place where they feel that they belong to.

As teachers, we may often miss out these youths and generally label them as the bad ones.

In the first place, we may not have found out the root of their rebellious.

There may be a chance for them to walk a different path when teachers take time to understand them better.

The Change

Many teenagers may be living each day without a purpose or dream. They find life meaningless and seek to satisfy the void within their hearts using the wrong ways like alcohol, drug, fights etc

When Azy was in the army, he found his passion in helping others as a medic.

He eventually become a paramedic after completing his national service.

He met a dialysis patient around his age who was about to die. The patient asked him to continue his studies to fulfil his dream of going back to school.

It was not easy for Azy but he went back to school. Without his family support, he had to work at night to support himself.

He was constantly tired but he continued to move forward.

He even wanted to remove his tattoo when he had the money since it was not appropriate for a nurse to have tattoo.

A dream and passion

Azy found his dream and passion to help others as a nurse. His desire had caused the change in him to move away from his gang.

As educators and parents, we must believe that every child is valuable to this society.

When we can believe in them, they can start to seek out the true meaning of their own lives.

We can lead them to find their own dreams and passions. There can be many possibilities when we do not give up on any child.

We should never just look at the surface but seek to find out the reasons. We should not simply label them as black sheep among the rest.

A sheep is still a sheep regardless of what it may look from the outside. Within every sheep, there is always a heart that continues to pump.

In conclusion

This short post is just to raise the awareness of educator that there is a hope for every child who may have gone astray.

We can be the guiding light to lead them back to the right path.

Azy found his light in the people that he helped but teachers in school could have led him to the right path if they found time to understand him better.

Many of us are guilty of focusing mainly on teaching solely our subjects but we have forgotten to guide their hearts and minds.
