A Unique Scrabble Board: An Innovative Way to Learn

Today, I am pleased to share with you a very special post. I believe that this is a very exciting and unique teaching method.

I have recently some taken some great pictures at SMK Ulumuddin, which show a fantastic and innovative way of using scrabble as an effective teaching tool.

This idea is the brainchild of Mrs. Sri Wahyuni, who is a professional teacher who makes it her mission to find creative and innovative teaching methods to make her lessons interesting.

She wanted to help her students with their vocabulary and she thought that scrabble would make a good fun lesson to help with spelling.

For those who are not aware, Scrabble is game for two to four players who compete against each other, by creating words from the letter tiles they have picked and placing them on a 15 x 15 grid of squares.

The letters have different values written on them depending on how frequently they are used in the English language. The less frequently used ones have the higher values. There are also squares on the scrabble board that if the word/letter is placed on one of them its worth more - like double letter score, or triple word score.

As you play the game, it looks much like a crossword, as you can use the letters put down by other players to help you create words too.

It is a very good method for expanding vocabulary and learning to spell well.

But at SMK Ulumuddin, it is no ordinary Scrabble game...

It is a scrabble board and letter tiles made by the students.

Bottle caps and cardboard coins are used as the letter tiles and the students have created the grid for the scrabble board and written in the squares, where there are the additional word and letter scores.

Mr. Syukri Yusda (a professional teacher training at SMK Ulumuddin) explains:

"it is a creative idea to recycle garbage into a unique art of learning."

It is a great game to play at school, as it's educational, makes students think, helps them learn new vocabulary (and spelling) in fun way and for those students who are competitive, it is a good creative outlet.
