In this lesson is for the students of high pre-intermediate and intermediate level of English according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) system..

If you don't know your level of English I recommend to use the following test to identify where you are in your learning.

Today, my lesson is based on podcasts series from BBC Learning English site called '6 minute English'. Here are each podcast is 6 minute long and there are people discuss different topics and along their conversation introduce new vocabulary by presenting new words and phrases and giving their definitions.

I personally love these podcasts and find them very useful to train your Listening Comprehension and boost your Vocabulary. If you would like to practice your British accent or train yourself to listen and understand British English these series of podcast are the great source for that.

Step 1: This week Dan and Kate discuss their New Year's resolutions and hear what some people are promising themselves for 2010.

This week's question:
What is the most common goal for people making New Year’s resolutions? Is it:

a) to sort out their finances and money
b) to lose weight
c) to learn a new language

Listen out for the answer in the programme!

Step 2: Learn new Vocabulary.

Step 3: Listen again and answer the questions below:
Audio is here

Step 4: Read the script and check if your answers were correct.

  • How did Dan meet the New Year? What are the resolutions? What are Kate’s resolutions?
  • What is the question for the week? What does it mean give up, take up?
  • What are they going to listen to? What does carry on mean? What resolutions does the speaker have for this year? Are those resolutions? Why (not)? What is one of the most common New Year’s resolutions in the UK?
  • How many people tried to give up smoking last year and how many actually succeeded?

Tomorrow is going to be PART 2 with exercises which will help you to gain new vocabulary...
