A 3D printable logo for my Bioinformatics Master, in honor of the end

in #steemmakers7 years ago

A small post about my graduation, new job, and my 3D keychain to honor my Master

Last Tuesday, I did my final presentation of my 6-month Internship, in front of a (very small) amphitheater with 5 of my teachers, one of them being my future colleague given my new job, and about 20 students !

This marked the very last thing left in my Bioinformatics Master Degree before I effectively graduated (technically we won't get our grades for another week or so, but they were relatively pleased with my report -it lacked some details- and very pleased with my presentation, which they said explained the missing details very well)

So, in celebration of this, I'm going to show you the Keychain I made using my Masters Degree logo, which I recently had to re-upload to myminifactory because of

Because, yeah, we have our own official logo ;)

Here's the basic steps of how I made it:

1. Logo of the Master in SVG format from a graphic designer friend/fellow student

I couldn't find the Logo file I used again, but I managed to find this superb flyer on FB for the red blazers we all have:

Be.Au.Ti.Ful

2. Modelling

Back then, Vectary was still easy to use (the new updated Vectary 2.0 can't run on my own computer... Luckily now that I have a job I can invest in a gamer/3D-modelling-capable laptop !!! ).

The modelling itself, as you can see by comparing the above picture with the 3D printed version:

was simply elevating the text, while linking the different internal segments that are filled together in Vectary, forcing it to generate faces on the bottom and top.

so going from this:

*   *
|   |
*   *

to this:

*--*
|  |
*--*

Which made Vectary consider the fully-enclosed inside space as being solid, at least as far as the STL file was concerned.

So, about 3-4 weeks ago this year's Master Association president contacted me about getting a-hold of the 3D model, which I hadn't realized was corrupted over on myminifactory.

Sadly Vectary didn't allow anyone to access the older Vectary 1.0 files, except me, the creator, who could only download it, so I had to get a copy and re-upload it to MyMiniFactory, and then a week or so ago someone test-printed it !

You might have noticed I talked of a new job. Due to actually liking my superiors and finding their policies respectable, I'm going to abide by the laws and rules and not disclose what we're doing, but suffice it to say I'm now officially a Research Engineer/Bioinformatician !!!

What I can disclose is that I'll be working on research projects and professional projects given to the lab, in the domain of Bioinformatics, but that's about it.

My first day was Monday, and today I got my first official mission, as well as a key to the lab locales because I keep turning up early when nobody is there to let me in XP

As you might have gathered, I still don't have my Migo 3D printer (9 months of waiting XS), but I've gotten a more direct contact with MakeX and they assure me I'll be getting one of the first ones as soon as they're ready, which will be at the end of the month / beginning of October. normally.

I hope that there's no delays...

PS: This post should mark my return to a more active role on the platform, as the whole "Oh god the project needs to be done, oh god now it's the report, oh dear the presentation, oh *@#! I haven't got a house in the city I'm going to start working in" thing has now officially concluded...

I should be back to more regular design projects now, as I'm officially leaving the "wait for my 3D printer to get here before designing more stuff" mindset too... I'll let the myminifactory Wonderland test-printers do some work instead as far as the whole "actual printed version" goes XD

I feel you. I am just finishing my Bachelor in Engineering and had to hand in my Thesis and giving my presentation a view weeks ago. The pressure to finish everything in time was quite high and I am glad I am now able to chill out a bit. :D
I am getting my diploma next week, finally.

btw: congratulations on passing and the new job! You seam to be quite excited about it.

Hehe, it was quite harrowing at the end !

Congrats on the thesis !

It's pretty interesting. I think I'm going to like it here ☺
