Brain Fry - (Short Story, Based on a Nightmare)

in #steempeak5 years ago

It was a rehabilitation center for drug addicts, and unlike your typical rehabilitation center, entire families were allowed to stay there during treatment.

It was the familiar depressed atmosphere, a few trying to stay positive, but mostly everyone was not enjoying their stay.

I remember the room where it all started. Everyone watching TV, and myself observing everyone else as they get their daily dose of programming.

I pondered how humans could spend so much time observing something that is not real, portraying hopes and dreams and visions of corporate persuasion to buy their products, both directly and subliminally.

That is when it happened..

I saw a low flying UFO, very low, and very slow.

It flew over top of the the building, not covertly at all.

It put out a sound like a hum that filled your entire body, a sound that you could not only hear, but also feel.

It was mostly white, with highlights of red and blue markings, not transparent in anyway, and shaped like an arrowhead.

I didn't see more than one, but somehow I knew there were plenty of them.

A few peoples gaze turned from the television in a look that was somewhere in between disbelief and sheer horror.

The sound never disappeared as it flew over top, and then it started coming back...

Fuck it was coming back!

I was curious to see it again, but not that curious.

I quickly made an exit out of the room where I first saw it, about 5 people just sitting there staring out the window.. Their curiosity , or "deer in a headlights" shock was enough to keep their asses firmly planted. Not me, fuck no..

As I moved out of sight from the window, I saw the room fill with a reddish purple hue, as the people who sat in a trance stared out the window in horror.

I don't know what they were able to see, I don't even know if they knew what the hell they were seeing.

But something happened, oh my god something happened... So awful, so terrifying.

I watched them start to tremble in the reddish purple hue, the humming sound so penetrating it was in my fucking head, it was IN my head...

Their trembling turned into full blown convulsing in a matter of no time, and I felt heat.. I felt my entire body heating up, and I knew right away what I was experiencing, or at least... I had an idea.

They were being pulsed with some type of electromagnetic radio frequency, like a microwave oven. The purpose, I wouldn't know until later, and I'm still not sure if I fully understood the purpose, even if it seemed obvious.

Needless to say, I didn't stick around long to absorb more radiation. When I felt it, I started low crawling through a long corridor, of which were giant windows. It was a damn fishbowl style corridor, with about 3 feet of wall under the windows, fun..

I made it to the other end of the building, a giant structure of a building.

It was night time, and the staff was limited. The few people that I saw that weren't pulsed were also hiding and moving, terrified as well. There were no comforting words to be exchanged with anyone. What the hell could anyone say? We were trapped and trying to hide from these things in a fishbowl like facility.

Then shit went from bad to worse..

The people who were being pulsed started to lose their sanity and become possessed by the madness.

In the beginning, they tried to trap those of us that were eluding the UFO(s).

I guess misery enjoys company eh?

There was no talking sense into any of them. They explained that they had all been categorized and inventoried, and that "they" would be coming back, and that there was no escaping it. They tried to trap the few who didn't get pulsed, but were not successful.

Even the children who had been pulsed seemed to take on an evil aura. Some would follow their parents and help them with sardonic looks, some would just sit on the floor and rock with no expression.

It was madness to a degree I cannot even put into words.

When the humming sound started picking up again, and the reddish purple light would fill an area, the affected/infected would just casually stop what they were doing and walk to the windows. They would willingly walk to the windows to be pulsed, over and over and over again. It seemed to happen every hour.

After about a day, the affected/infected became more zombie like. They wouldn't even leave the windows anymore, and children just sat on beds rocking. In rooms that had huge windows, all the rooms had huge windows really..

At one point one of the people looked at me and said:

"They know you're here, they're going to get you too ya know.."

I already knew they knew..

They had telepathically communicated it to me, somehow..

What started as me trying to escape them, became me being forced to watch the brain fry.

It was my punishment for trying to elude them, and worse, I knew my time was coming.

They told me..

They told me without words... I just knew, I felt the message in my head, it came through the hum.

I had to watch these poor people being lobotomized with radio frequencies, and know that my time was coming.

In the end, I was the last one. No others remained who had not been victimized and turned into brain fried zombies.

I thought:

"This isn't right, this shouldn't be happening. I don't understand why, for what purpose, why would they do this?"

And then I woke from the nightmare.

The End.

This short story was a nightmare I had last night. It was one of the most terrifying nightmares I've ever had, and I remember the entire thing, vividly..

Thank you for reading.

Weird! Not just weird on its face, but because I once had a pretty similar dream. Similar in that it involved a sudden alien invasion, confusion, and the invaders either killing people outright or converting people to become like them - and me and a few others evading them, for now...
In my dream it was a big outdoor concert, and they were using some kind of injections in the "crash" tents, only there were far too many people being taken in there, and the injections didn't seem to be making anyone better...
Just like your dream, mine quickly processed from seeming normal, to unsettling, to horror. It was disturbing, as I still remember years later.
I may or may not have been under the influence of some painkillers from having my wisdom teeth pulled when I had the dream 🤔

Thank you for sharing your scary dream story with me as well @wholeself-in,

It sounds equally as terrifying as this one.

I was writing this the second I woke up, because I tend to forget dreams sometimes if I don't, but I'm pretty sure I wasn't going to forget this one regardless. It was very very vivid, and one of those dreams where I was able to literally feel things. It seemed as real as real can be..

When I was a child I had the ability to "construct" my dreams, control them. That stopped after puberty, but I still have pretty vivid dreams sometimes.

Usually I figure out metaphorical meanings, and apply them to my life. This one, I'm not sure if there is a meaning for.

In the end, it felt as if the entire thing was specifically intended for me.. As is everyone else was just avatars used in a game, and the ultimate objective was to play with me like a scientist experimenting on animals.

I really think there is more to dreams than we realize, it was just way too real..

Thank you for taking the time to comment and share your experience :)

😂 Thank you!

This was awesome well written! What a trip. This could be an episode of Black Mirror!
What a bizarre world we live in. The scariest part of this story/nightmare is that we are living it. We are living it right now, and people are willing participants. The truth really is stranger than fiction. <3

Maybe that was the metaphoric meaning behind the dream.. The mass hypnotic spell humanity is under, and even the one's who are aware are somewhat trapped in it.

The only solution that I see, is literally going out and living in the forest, because even the truthers are stuck in this, as it's the only way to really reach humans anymore. We are literally living in another dimension in this reality , right? Crazy..

Thanks for reading Akiroq <3 Not bad for writing with my morning coffee. I wanted to write it quick so I wouldn't risk forgetting parts. I kind of doubt I would have though, this dream was staggeringly real feeling.

I totally thought it was metaphorical when I read it.
Yeah, even just by being on a computer/phone and on the internet we are active participants. But what can we do?! Like you said, it is literally what is necessary to get any type of message out.
Yeah, on the outside looking in, but still in it despite all protest.

Thank you for helping me see the metaphor, because this dream/nightmare went exactly how I wrote it, and I always try to search for metaphorical meaning in dreams. I can see now, this is definitely the meaning behind it.

That's one of the things I love about you. Not only are you beautiful, you're highly perceptive and analytical, and you are a sweetheart. I'm a lucky dude indeed <3

I like this, some cool details and I really like the idea of microwaving people. Can't say I am a big fan of ending it with "and then I woke up", even if it actually was a dream you had!

I'm sorry you didn't like the ending :(

It actually was a dream I had before waking up this morning, and that is how it ended :(

Please don't microwave people, it's not a good idea! 😂

I had a very vivid dream when I was a teenager, that I've written out here before.
It ended the same way, I just woke up, only I was crying for real when I awoke

Yes, this was quite disturbing, and I didn't really find it funny at all, (I was barely awake writing it too, because I wanted to ensure I didn't forget any details after waking fully) but I don't mind if other people do. Oh well, I do my best to convey things how they are to me, if the legitimacy is to be questioned, then I can only perceive that as projection of another's emotions, and not personal.

yeah I caught that it was actually a dream. Just ending it with "and then I woke up" is such a cliche even if in this case it actually was what happened LOL

Lol, yeah I guess you're right, it is pretty cliche.

Thank you :)

Scary shit @futuremind, but I somehow think it has already happened.
I've seen things too, I've had barely remembered dreams, and some
I remember all too clearly, that I wish I didn't remember.
Your story was well written, I commend your grammar
(I'm a grammar Nazi, but I make misteaks as well ha ha ha)
Post upvoted 100%

Oh, and something else I know you will find interesting.. The setting was a VA inpatient rehab center that I was in 4 times years back when I was trying to get clean from alcoholism and cocaine addiction. So this was a place I have been, various times.

(Just didn't feel it was pertinent to mention in the post,) (and the facility is definitely not for families, but in the dream it was)

Yes, it was terrifying, and I outlined some of my thoughts with @wholeself-in and @akiroq here in regards to some different aspects of dreams. In some ways I believe they carry messages metaphorically, but I don't know with this one, because of how real it seemed, and I remember feeling the heat in my body from the radiation, really everything was so real man.

Quantum physics seem to be "telling us" things about dimensions. If you look up some information on the D-Wave quantum computer, and talk of different dimensions like it's just known science now, it makes you wonder what has been going on, and whether or not we are stuck in some kind of energy harvest loop. It sounds far out, but then again so does this technology that we just "suddenly have".

I know you remember the world without this tech, and I'm hard pressed to truly believe humans invented this shit.

Thank you for your kind words. Feel free to post the link about your dream, I am curious to read it.

P.S. I'm kind of a grammar Nazi too, but I know I have some errors. I tend to use commas too much, and break up my paragraphs into small ones to ease the reading experience, sometimes I don't know the proper use of apostrophes either, but I'm getting better at it I think.

Yeah, that possessive apostrophe always eludes me, and I can't see to find any modern
Definition for its use.
I'm not sure how I would find the link to that dream post, as I've posted several
About my dreams, but I'll try to find it. I don't even remember the name
Of the post. I'll try though, a most unusual dream premise
I was a slave to drugs and alcohol for 40 yrs, in and out of rehabs, but never
The VA. I DID go into the VA Homeless Veterans Domiciliary for 6 months.

The alcoholism started for me in the Marine Corps, ah yes.. founded in a bar Tun Tavern Philadelphia PA, 1775, we work hard , play hard, and breed homeless alcoholics with PTSD!

And became coupled with cocaine addiction during perpetual homelessness over the course of 10 years.

The facility I was in was also a domiciliary/rehab. They housed up to 180 the first time I went, but had been cut back to around 150 inpatient residents the fourth time I was there.

I had to deconstruct what they were teaching, I really did, because I found it to be (in my own perception) revolving door principles which have many fallacies. You cannot question these fallacies really. It's simply black and white, and nothing more, and if you do not conform to these "principles" and accept them, then you will continually relapse and come back. They pretty much stamp that as a guarantee.

Well the funny thing about that is, how high relapse rate seems to be, So.. That is a major fallacy in and of itself! Because most people suffering from addiction seem to adopt the principles at face value, are impressionable and desperate, and few really question them.

To make it short, I don't buy most of it, and I'm going on 3 years now clean and sober, unless you consider cannabis (which the rehabs do) still being in addiction. I've also cut that out for the past two months, due to finances and unreliable connections to obtain it here. Cannabis helped me stay off the booze and cocaine, and was a major part of my healing process through PTSD, which I'm still working through. Myself like many that join the service, had some pretty severe PTSD prior to enlistment, and joined to escape broken households/abuse in the family. The military exacerbated that alright, and I won't get going on my opinions with the war machine and system here, trying to keep it brief.

I have mastered its and it's now haha, but still have issues with many others.
I have quite a few posts now too, and have a hard time finding certain ones. No big deal, I'm sure you've had an array of wild dreams as I have.

Nice chatting @jerrytsuseer

Hi @futuremind, I think this is a very good short story that reflects the feeling of anxiety at the drug rehabilitation site. The atmosphere is definitely uncomfortable there and it becomes like a nightmare for you. Have a nice day, sir.

Thank you @elianaelisma,

Have a great day miss.
