Sure, it will take a few hours of your time, but you cannot overlook the benefits you will gain in the process. For instance, content audits allow you to get more insight into the things you need to improve and things that benefit you more. That being the case, how can you do a proper content audit on your website? Keep reading this article if you want to find out more about it!

Generate a List of URLs

The first step is by compiling a list of URLs you have and put them in a spreadsheet. For a small website, you can do it manually, but if you prefer to use software, Screaming Frog is such a great choice to help you generate a list. The free version for the software is available and allows you to crawl up to 500 links, while the premium version features extra options for any serious marketers.

Collect Data from Google Analytics

Done with the URLs, next is collecting important data from Google Analytics and put them in a Google Spreadsheet. You only have to click the Add-ons menu in the spreadsheet and choose Google Analytics and menu ‘Create New Report’. Fill in the name of your report, the site you collect the stats for, and choose the metrics and dimensions you want to use. Once finished, just click ‘Create Report’ so a new sheet will appear with all those created details.

Social Shares Data

To collect data about social shares, log in to SharedCount and go with Bulk Upload Function. If you do not have the account yet, just register for free. Then you have to run the report and export it to .csv so you can add it quickly to your spreadsheet. Meanwhile, SharedCount offers stats from Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, StumbleUpon, Google+, and Pinterest.

Put the Data in One Place

Gather all data you have collected and put them in one sheet so that you can analyze and draw the insights easier and efficiently. You can either make the Mastersheet containing those data or use the data from Screaming Frog. You can utilize VLOOKUP to help you with the process. VLOOKUP enables you to get the data from relevant worksheet. If you need to hide some columns you do not have to analyze, you can do so by right clicking on the said columns. Repeat the process for your social shares data on SharedCount as well.

Core Analysis

Next stage is you will do core analysis where you can figure out what you should improve, what you need, what works and don’t, what needs to be repeated and so on. Here, you are allowed to analyze SEO elements such as keywords, meta description, title, headings, etc. From the data in SharedCount and Analytics, you will know the top performing content by analyzing its search traffic and its length. Even you can discover the best time to publish your content.
