HAS SCIENCE ACTUALLY PROVED THAT OUR SOUL HAS A PHYSICAL WEIGHT?

in #steemstem6 years ago (edited)

How's it going fam? Today I present my new post before you which might change your theory about souls. Your good ol' belief about our soul being formless, dimensionless and weightless might be changed after reading this article.

SOUL

In many mythological, philosophical and religious traditions, there is a belief of the presence of an incorporeal essence inside a human body called SOUL. Most Christians believe soul to be an ontological realty distinct from the human body.

Richard Swinburne, a philosopher of religion at Oxford University, once wrote that -

"It is a frequent criticism of substance dualism that dualists cannot say what souls are. Souls are immaterial subjects of mental properties. They have sensations and thoughts, desires and beliefs, and perform intentional actions. Souls are essential parts of human beings".

According to common Christian belief, when people die, their souls will be judged by God and determined to go to Heaven or Hell and that Jesus Christ plays a key role in their salvation. The souls of people who have committed sins and have abandoned Jesus Christ as their Savior are taken to Hell for eternal damnation or separation from God. Others believe that the babies or the ones suffering from mental illness are taken into Heaven through the sacrifice of The Holy Christ on the basis of God's grace.

According to Bhagavad Gita, the holy book of Hindus, it is stated that-

"Know that to be imperishable & indestructible, by which all this is pervaded; for none can bring about the destruction of this indestructible substance, the imperishable soul."

SAID BY SRI KRISHNA, A HINDU GOD. SOURCE

AND

"They are both ignorant, he who knows the soul to be capable of killing and he who takes it as killed; for verily the soul neither kills, nor is killed."

SAID BY SRI KRISHNA, A HINDU GOD. SOURCE

All these references, one way or another, states us that our soul is not a thing which we can see or touch or smell or taste. Soul is immortal and nothing can kill it. Plus, it has no physical mass.

But does the last assumption hold true?

Duncan MacDougall, a physician from Haverhill, Massachusetts had made an attempt in 1901 to measure the mass lost by a human body when the soul departs from it after death by measuring the mass difference of six patients after their deaths.

He then found out that his patients had lost 21.3 grams when measured the weight before and after their death. Therefore he called his experiment as

"THE 21 GRAM EXPERIMENT"

He also tried to measure the mass change of the dogs but found out that there is no change in their body mass. Also, one of the patients lost his weight but regained it after a short while. Some others lost even more weight after the measurement. He also said that in order to get any true conclusions, this experiment would have to be repeated many times. But this statement was not published in his publication.

This experiment also received an enormous number of criticisms. One of the main critics was the physician Augustus P. Clarke. He said that the experiment was not valid and gave a scientific reason for it.

He stated that at the time of death there is always a sudden increase in the temperature of the body due to the fact that the lungs are no longer capable of cooling blood. This causes a subsequent increase in the sweating of the patient which might, as stated by Mr. Clarke, is the reason for the loss of 21.3 grams.

He also stated that dogs do not have sweat glands like humans and thus there is no sweating resulting to the fact that mass of the dogs after death remains constant.

So the experiment done by Duncan MacDougall was proven wrong.

But this also does not disprove that our soul is weightless, does it? No one has ever known or will know the true nature of our soul as said by The Father (if you believe him). So does this question about soul will always remain a mystery? I really don't know. But the thing which i know for sure is that --

Nice post,
I have seen the whole episode of this on discovery and by reading your post also......
One can not confirm the reason for the weight loss is leaving soul only.
And I can not either question on the existence of the soul, as I don't know whether its there or not.

yes mate. This question really is a mystery. Soul is something we can understand about only after the death. And surely the dead's not gonna be alive again to tell the journey of its soul.

Yeah that's true.....

To the question in your title, my Magic 8-Ball says:

As I see it, yes
