What Are You Thinking About? AI Can Decode

in #steemstem6 years ago (edited)

Hello Steemians, I am going to be talking about an interesting section of science/technology today. I myself was drawn to check it out after I participated for an AI contest by @originalworks recently, although I found a lot of interesting topics/achievement, I'm going to be talking about the one I found particularly amusing and understanding.

It is no news that one of the most desirable wants of human beings is probably to be able to read minds of other humans as portrayed in some science movies where some scientists were watched attaching some sophisticated machines to human head to decipher their thoughts, but all thanks to technology/science, this desire can stop being just a mere fiction by the creation of Mind Reading AI That Can Detect What You're Thinking And Produce An Image Of It. Now our thoughts are not purely constricted to ourselves alone as it can now be accessed.

Although this telepathic research has been a long time desire, it was not until recently that a milestone breakthrough has been recorded by AI experts in China, Japan and USA. They made published research showing that computers can actually reproduce what humans are thinking about through the use of functional magnetic resonance imaging (or fMRI) machines – which helps to measure brain activity – connected to deep neural networks, which reproduce human brain functions.
Recently, Carnegie Mellon University scientists have also developed Algorithms that can make use of the designs of brain activities to penetrate the root of complex human thoughts that occurs in the brain.

How It Works

Biologically, the neurons are the core functional components of the brain, they are excitable cells that processes and transmits information by electrochemical signalling in the nervous system. Thus neurologically, the mind forms complex thoughts from the fractions of other correlating thoughts and which can be seen by alterations in blood-flow and electrical impulses within the human brain. Consequentially all these electrical signals vary distinctively from thoughts to thoughts.
This is where these AI researchers comes in, they attach the fMRI machine mentioned above t human head. This machine would then detect varying electrical impulses and blood-flow as they represent fractions of the human thought pattern, and also calculate the activities of the brain. Once these impulses are detected, they will be moved to a "neural network" that would activate the functionality of the human brain.
This machine has been designed not to only track the brain impulses but can also create a sequential stack of the fractions of these impulses to create a clear image of what the human is actually thinking exactly just like in the human biological mind.
One of the most fascinating aspects of this particular masterpiece of technology is the fact that it is able to decode and represent a thought in form of an image it had not been “trained” to see. You wouldn't be wrong to call this Telepathic Witchcraft

It Can Only Get Better

Presently, this Artificial Intelligence can only be used when the FMRI scanner is placed on the human head. But there are ongoing work by researchers to make the whole process wireless for maximum effectiveness and portability.
Furthermore, with the future advancement envisaged for this tech, it would give AI the capability to see the world from human perspective and further create the possibility of one's dreams to be represented as a computerized image.

Interesting Applications

This piece of technology has many potential benefits to add to the human society. It would aid the law enforcement agencies in interrogating criminals as you just need to make use of the device and take all the information you require.
It can also help in the health sector as information from a person with temporary amnesia or someone in a coma could be accessed easily and the device described could also provide an easier means of communication for those who are deaf/dumb and also enable the advancement of prosthetics controlled by thoughts.
There a lot more interesting applications but minimized it to the most enticing.

My Conclusion

Most of my life I have had what I call my own 'mini cinema', or a screen inside of my head. I see movies, as real as real life ones. And when have been afforded presentiments with them, I have always wished I could somehow make those movies visible to those around me. I wish I could play those pictures on my head screens to those I care about.
This piece of technology made this desires seem feasible again. I use to honestly think about AI as a great competitive force with humans but with my research, I'm less prejudiced. This does not totally says AI are 100% Blame free. There are disadvantages but that's a story for another day. For now am pretty excited about how AI can actually makes human society a better one.

This may not pass for a total AI post since I'm just an AI enthusiast, so your correction and criticisms would be gladly entertained. It would further aid my ignorance. Thanks for reading.
