A really exciting discovery. And it's amazing that it is the eluding neutrino that pointed in the direction of this distant energy source.
How are scientists able to find out the precise direction of the neutrinos?
Is the Cherenkov light emitted in a certain direction depending on the direction of the neutrinos?
Thanks for sharing.
In practice, the sensors in IceCube collects the Cherenkov light left by the secondaries originating from the initial neutrino. The pattern of the light reveals the direction the neutrino comes from as well as its energy.
Does it clarify?
Yes, thanks. I'm sure there is a lot of clever electronic at play!
I am unfortunately not the good person to give you crunchy details about the electronics :(
