E' da relativamente poco tempo che abbiamo iniziato ad utilizzare la plastica. Eppure, oggi la plastica e' ovunque. Il nome stesso indica un qualcosa di pliabile e che puo' essere modificato facilmente. La plastica e' uno dei polimeri sintetici piu' usati oggi.
Tutto comincio' nel 1869, quando un'azienda di New York ha offerto 10,000$ a chiunque avesse inventato un sostituto per l'avorio. I biliardi andavano di moda all'epoca, e massacrare elefanti per ottenere avorio era parecchio costoso. Cosi, motivato dalla possibilita' di vincere il premio in denaro, Wesley Hyatt invento' la plastica.
Il vero boom della plastica avvenne durante la seconda guerra mondiale. In quel periodo le risorse naturali scarseggiavano e si ricorreva spesso a sostituti sintetici. D'altronde la plastica era molto flessibile e aveva parecchi usi nell'industria. Nel dopoguerra, le aziende che sintetizzavano plastica, cercarono di espandere il suo uso.
Le prime applicazioni erano dal preservare i cibi, ai famosi tapperware. Dagli anni 50 ad oggi l'uso della plastica ha visto una crescita esponenziale, oggi sintetizziamo piu' plastica che acciaio e praticamente la plastica e' ovunque.
Questo e' un grosso problema, non solo per l'ambiente ma anche per la nostra salute.
Uno studio recente evidenzia come oggi ingeriamo grosse quantita' di microplastiche. In media, ogni settimana arriviamo ad ingerire intorno ai 5 grammi di plastica, e' come se ci mangiassimo una carta di credito a settimana.
La plastica non si degrada facilmente, ma per effetto dei fattori ambientali si puo' frammentare in pezzi piu' piccoli, quando siamo al di sotto dei 5 mm parliamo di microplastiche. Residui di plastica si possono trovare nei cibi che mangiamo, nell'acqua che beviamo e persino nell'aria che respiriamo. Se ti facessero delle analisi del sangue probabilmente troverebbero tracce di microplastiche nel tuo corpo.
Gli effetti sulla nostra salute non sono ancora noti, ma studi iniziali non hanno trovato dati confortanti.
