in #steemstem6 years ago (edited)
This post was specifically made to house the references and glossary of the shea butter post which you can find here. I had to do this considering the length of the post, this way even if you aren't really into science stuff you could still relate with the post a great deal.

GLOSSARY

Anti-inflammatory :

The refers to the ability of a substance, drugs or any form of treatment to reduce swelling or inflammation.

Inflammation :

This is the biological response of body tissues to harmful stimuli, such as pathogens, damaged cells, or irritants, and it is a protective response involving immune cells, blood vessels, and molecular mediators.

Antioxidant :

  • Are substance that inhibits oxidation, especially one used to counteract the deterioration of stored food products.
  • A substance such as vitamin C or E that removes potentially damaging oxidizing agents in a living organism.

Anti-microbial

These are substances that are active against microorganisms, especially a bacterium causing disease or fermentation.

Antitumor :

This implies inhibiting the development of a tumour.

Beta-defensin-2 :

This is an antibiotic peptide which is locally regulated by inflammation.

Chemopreventive :

The ability of a drug or compound to interfere with a disease process. For example, cancer chemopreventive agents — agents used to inhibit, delay, or reverse carcinogenesis.

Citronella :

This is an essential oil obtained from the leaves and stems of different species of Cymbopogon (lemongrass). The oil is used extensively as a source of perfumery chemicals such as citronellal, citronellol, and geraniol. These chemicals find extensive use in soap, candles and incense, perfumery, cosmetic, and flavouring industries throughout the world.[1] Citronella oil is also a plant-based insect repellent and has been registered for this use in the United States since 1948.

Eczema :

This is a condition that causes a person's skin to become inflamed, itchy, red, cracked, and rough.

Ester :

An ester is a chemical compound derived from an acid (organic or inorganic) in which at least one –OH (hydroxyl) group is replaced by an –O–alkyl (alkoxy) group. Usually, esters are derived from a carboxylic acid and an alcohol.

Factor VII coagulant :

Is one of the proteins that cause blood to clot in the coagulation cascade. It is an enzyme of the serine protease class.

Hypercholesterolemic :

This implies the presence of high levels of cholesterol in the blood.

Hypertrophic Scar :

A hypertrophic scar is a cutaneous condition characterized by deposits of excessive amounts of collagen which gives rise to a raised scar but not to the degree observed with keloids. Like keloids, they form most often at the sites of pimples, body piercings, cuts and burns.

LCPUFAs :

Long-Chain Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids.

NFκB (nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells) :

Is a protein complex that controls transcription of DNA, cytokine production and cell survival. NF-κB is found in almost all animal cell types and is involved in cellular responses to stimuli such as stress, cytokines, free radicals, heavy metals, ultraviolet irradiation, oxidized LDL, and bacterial or viral antigens. NF-κB plays a key role in regulating the immune response to infection. Incorrect regulation of NF-κB has been linked to cancer, inflammatory and autoimmune diseases, septic shock, viral infection, and improper immune development.

Occlusive :

Occluding or tending to occlude. Of or being a bandage or dressing that closes a wound and keeps it from the air.

Pheromone :

a chemical substance produced and released into the environment by an animal, especially a mammal or an insect, affecting the behaviour or physiology of others of its species.

Phytonutrients :

These are substance found in certain plants which are believed to be beneficial to human health and help prevent various diseases.

Psoriasis :

Saponin :

Is any of the class of steroid and terpenoid glycosides which foam when shaken with water, examples of which are used in detergents and foam fire extinguishers.

Saponification :

In simple terms, saponification is the name for a chemical reaction between an acid and a base to form a salt. When you make soap using the cold process soap making method, you mix an oil or fat (which is your acid) with Lye (which is your base) to form soap (which is a salt).

Stratum corneum :

This is part of the epidermis and is the outermost upper layer of the skin. It provides the rate-limiting barrier for penetration into and through the skin.

Synthesized :

This implies make (something) by synthesis, especially chemically. Synthesis is the production of chemical compounds by a reaction from simpler materials.

Triglyceride :

Triglycerides are a type of fat (lipid) found in your blood. When you eat, your body converts any calories it doesn't need to use right away into triglycerides. The triglycerides are stored in your fat cells. Later, hormones release triglycerides for energy between meals.

peptide :

Is a compound consisting of two or more amino acids linked in a chain, the carboxyl group of each acid is joined to the amino group of the next by a bond of the type -OC-NH-.

waxlike :

This entails having the paleness of wax.
