Sanctuary Animal Update.jpg

Yesterday, Steemit Sanctuary received its first animal, the Amur leopard which came all the way from Russia. Today I will be listing 3 of the upcoming animals, which would make its way into this zoo. It's important to have some plan to make the managing experience of this virtual zoo fun rather than a burden. Let's check out what I have imported to be a part of this sanctuary.

Orangutan

Orangutan is one of the most intelligent mammals ever lived on earth. I mean, they were able to operate some of the tools which we considered as sophisticated, and they build a new nest every single night from branches and plant's leaves to sleep. There are currently three distinct species of orangutan which has been identified:

  • Borneo Orangutan
  • Sumatra Orangutan
  • Tapanuli Orangutan

They ate varieties of fruits especially those with either sugary or fatty pulp. They can eat as much as 11,000 calories per day, especially during fruit season. When the number of fruit is scarce, they can eat tree barks and leaves which total up to 2000 calories per day. They play a vital role as a "gardener" in the forest, acting as an agent to disperse some seeds within their habitats. As this creature has a low reproductive rate compared with other mammals, they were vulnerable to extinction. They can be caught quickly as they were slow. Their offspring would be kept as a pet while the adult orangutan would be killed for food.

We will be having further discussions when this animal reached our zoo safely.

Tiger

Picture From Wikimedia

Panthera tigris or commonly known as a tiger is the largest species of cat, recognisable by its dark stripes pattern on the orange fur, lighter on the bottom side. They feed mainly on deer and bovids which usually can be found within their territory. Unlike Amur leopard who prefer to reside alone, this animal is sociable despite its territorial attitude. In the 20th century, the number of this animal was estimated around 100,000 individuals who live in the wild. Now, the number has plummeted to 4000 individuals, mostly resides in the Indian subcontinent. They can be classified based on the classification used by the Cat Classification Task Force:

  • Bengal tiger
  • Caspian tiger
  • Amur tiger
  • Indochinese tiger
  • Malayan tiger
  • South China tiger
  • Javan tiger
  • Bali tiger
  • Sumatran tiger

There are a few reasons why this animal is on the brink of extinction. This includes:

  • Destruction and Fragmentation of habitat
  • Poaching activity
  • Demand for traditional Chinese medicine

Let's hope some of them would arrive safely.

Giant Panda

Picture From Wikimedia

I know right? This virtual zoo would be incomplete without a giant panda living in it. I mean come on people, who don't recognise this cute little thing. They have a large black patch around the both of its eyes, ears and across its round, squishy body. They can be found mostly in the high mountains of western China. This animal can live just by eating 84 pounds of bamboos per day. Other than that, it also can eat rodents, birds and carrion.

They are threatened mostly by habitat loss which is usually annihilated due to urbanisation. A few other reasons why this animal need to be kept in conservation are:

  • Fragmentation of forest which make mating process highly unlikely
  • Forest destruction which will reduce the number of bamboos

I can't wait to see this cute animal, roaming around this virtual zoo. How about you guys?

Thank you for your attention. If any of those animals listed above reached safely, you will be getting notifications from me in the form of an educational article. Have a beautiful day and thank you for visiting this zoo. It's still lacking but improving.
