Nice post. One Interesting tidbit about eradicating polio is that we have Bill Gates to thank for much of this effort. He has personally made this one of the major goals of the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation. He might be a geek, but he's one hell of a good guy.

Hey, thanks! I could not agree more, the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation are a spectacular example of how to evidence can be brought into global aid. They get a fair amount of shit for some of their choices but are certainly less wrong with their contributions than a lot of organisations. However like @snowyknight mentions in the comments here it is Rotary that likely done the most for the polio eradication effort.
