From time to time, we are told that some bacteria that can "eat" plastic has been discovered.
Recently, there has been news that scientists have isolated an enzyme from a plastic food bacterium found at a waste disposal site in Japan.
And not only that, but the team of scientists made a small change and it appeared that the new enzyme works even better.
Is that really good?
We change the environment and the environment responds, as Dr. Ian Malcolm the mathematician in the movie / book “Jurassic Park” said:
"Life will find the way."
Means, we can’t completly control all aspects of changes in a sphere that contains living organisms.
It's impossible !

On one hand, it can be wonderful, that was my feeling reading this news.
We found what will dismantle plastic waste in the world with this new life.
On the other hand in a second thinking, who promises that these new microbes will not damage other ecosystems, other living beings, including humans?
The answer to the question is really difficult and the studies are just in the beginning so until we find the truth, it may be too late.
What is even more worrisome is that researchers are changing biological molecules without knowing the consequences of the change in advance ... as if playing “God” without knowing how.
This dilemma of where is the limit of our research arises again, is everything is allowed in the name of science?
Some will say, that it is actually a natural process of the world evolution and if we evolved to be able to make the changes, it must be so.
However, it is also known that evolutionary processes sometimes end in extinction too, is this, what is expected to happen?
Finally, perhaps the solution to plastics in the oceans is already acheived, but what does this solution hold?
No one knows at the moment.
Meanwhile, let’s do things to avoid ways plastic to get to the oceans and reduce the pollution.
Probably, we can’t survive without our seas...

מעת לעת, אנו מתבשרים שנתגלה איזה חיידק שמסוגל ל"אכול" פלסטיק.
לאחרונה היה בחדשות שמדענים בודדו אנזים בחיידק אוכל פלסטיק שנמצא באתר פסולת ביפן.
ולא רק זאת, אלא שצוות המדענים ערך בו שינוי קטן ולכאורה יצא שהאנזים החדש עובד טוב יותר.
האם זה טוב באמת ?
אנו משנים את הסביבה ופוגעים מרקם החיים אז הסביבה מגיבה בשינוי ויוצרת בדרך חיים אחרים משלה בדיוק כמו שאמר ד"ר איאן מלקולם המתימטיקאי בסרט/ספר "פארק היורה" :
"החיים ימצאו את הדרך" . לא נוכל להשגיח שזה לא יקרה.
מצד אחד, זה יכול להיות משמח הינה מצאנו מה שיפרק את הפסולת הפלסטית בעולם.
מצד שני, מי מבטיח שהמיקרובים החדשים הללו לא יגרמו נזק מערכות אקולוגיות אחרות, ליצורים חיים אחרים וביניהם האדם?
התשובה לשאלה ממש קשה והמחקרים הם בראשית הדרך ועד שנדע את האמת יתכן וכבר יהיה מאוחר.
מה שמדאיג עוד יותר זה שחוקרים משנים מולקולות ביולוגיות מבלי לדעת מה יהיו תוצאות השינוי מראש...כאילו משחקים ב"אלוהים" מבלי לדעת איך?
הדילמה הזו, של איפה הגבול של המחקרים שלנו מתעוררת שוב ביתר שאת, האם הכל מותר בשם המדע ?
יש שיגידו, שזה בעצם תהליך טבעי של האבולוציה ואם אנו התפתחנו להיות מסוגלים לבצע את השינויים כנראה שכך צריך להיות, אבל ידוע שתהליכים אבולוציוניים מסתיימים לפעמים גם בהכחדה, האם זה מה שצפוי לנו ?
סופו של דבר, אולי נמצא הפתרון לפלסטיק באוקיאנוסים אבל מה צופן פתרון זה בחובו ? איש כרגע לא יודע.
בינתיים, בואו נעשה משהו לשמור על האוקיאנוסים , בלעדיו ספק אם יהיו לנו חיים.
